Here I chronicle the actions I have made to try and get myself out of the Penguin Prison...

Interesting little article, though look at the latest comments at the bottom of it.

He was asked - If he has seen any improvements yet, and he answered..

"Unfortunately not. I'm still waiting on the next penguin update :-(" and that comment was 4 months ago.

Interesting one to monitor and see what google do.

Posted tonight on his Google+ account:

I'm seeing a steady 60% increase in search traffic since Penguin 2.0.

It seems to be across keyword groups and pages so probably not due to a great post of mine ;-)

I'm suspecting it's more to do with Penguin 2.0 being better at its job and less to do with what I did:

It was painful to read that.... Sounds like he was a little dependent on the URL shortening 301's for link juice. But I was shocked to read how forum posts and inactive accounts came back to haunt him.

Hidden Keyword & Spammy Forum Signatures are one of the worst things that google hurts those.

I should not use any keyword that is hidden on my site, and should believe in best forum, that always love us.

The first step out of a Penguin penalization is, removing all spammy links.
Secondly you should observe your link pattern well and try to get a good mixture with tha most various anchors possible. Most website owners overlook the impotance of "nofollow" links. Include them in your link building.

I'm still monitoring my slight recovery after Penguin 2.0. It went back down again for a few weeks then up again.

I'll update the article when I feel more certain about what's happening.

And I'm just about to post up a disavow file to GWT!

I don't really see anything new about it. His actions were typical, removing spammy links and hidden texts. The partial recovery again has happened to many people, without too much efforts. May this is all that we can do, remove the spammy links / text and just wait for Google to make the next update.

I've heard John Mueller say a few times that Google tries to be "granular" and recently a comment was that most of the algorithms are granular.

That it, you're not "not punished" or "punished" but you get more punished based on how bad you are.

From what people report it does not seem like that with Penguin. But this just may be because the algo is updated so infrequently and has such big alterations that it affects websites dramatically on the updates.

I've just disavowed about 40 domains. None that I created but ones I know have no value and may have negative value. Again, I have to wait till the next Penguin update to see what happens. Or maybe not, I've just told Google to ignore some PageRank, so I could go down more!
