Can't get rid of those pesky nonexisting pages

I've been trying for a month to get rid of pages that are not there anymore.

I took over this site about two months ago and made a new site map with a 404 page and header then submitted it.

Went into webmaster tools requested the pages to be removed from the directory and cache.

Now it showed up again and in webmaster tools its keeps crawling old pages.
Yes i have a robot.txt file only block certain folders.

Can someone give me advise on what might be happening? And should I resolve this before SEO?

Are these old pages that were recreated with a different link, or pages that were scrapped all together?

Have you done all of your 301 redirects for all these pages?

If they are all gone, they shouldn't be re-crawled....

Are you sure that you are seeing 404 errors due to the fact they are gone or because they are being linked from other pages on the web.

In google webmaster tools, look at where it's finding the 404 errors. It could be some completely random scraper site that is linking to these old pages.

Set up specific redirect to similar pages - not to the index page or just one page. Then go back to webmaster tools and confirm the redirects are working.

Then report it as fixed and you shouldn't see them again.

If it's an issue that the pages haven't fallen out of the search ... look at this info:

I just checked the incoming links and you're right, all the pages that keep popping up are there. Now my question is, if i don't have any similar pages to redirect to, can I just use any existing pages and hope I won't ever see them again?

Thank you Shellie for the awesome explanation.

You welcome!

Choose a page for redirect that is similar if you can. Consider spreading out the redirects so they don't all go to your homepage.

Good luck - let us know how it turns out.

If anyone needs help, here is a tutuorial for redirects:

If it's wordpress, you should install any one of the dozens of free plugins that 301 redirects 404 pages to your homepage. Then you'll get the links and traffic going to your homepage.

Well, the plugin is a good idea for wordpress if that is what the OP has, but you don't to advise him to redirect all the links to the home page. You want to direct the old pages to the new pages with similar content. That's much more user (and SEO) friendly.
