PR >/</= Inbound Links

I have the question somewhere in my head, but it's hard to turn it into words, but I'll try.

What's more important, the quantity of inbound links (getting lots of links with targetted anchor text) or the quality of inbound links (the transfer of PR, e.g. a PR8 site linking to your page, also with targetted anchor text of course).

Is it still worth it to buy text links on pages with high PR?

It is my belief that the relevance of a link -- in the old days at least, judged from the anchor text -- is more important than PR boost.

We have debated this elsewhere and very recently on this forum, but it is generally agreed that PR makes no contribution whatsoever to your SERP position for competitive search terms.

I disagree. Once I got a PR6 from a PR5, I got higher rankings on Google for some search terms

Was that caused by one inbound link with high PR or several new inbound links?

Several, but its not the PR you get from the links, its the higher pr.

Higher overall PR = higher rankings on google.

But I do have a PR7 link...

On what type of search terms? If your search terms are not highly competitive then that may be the case./

Thats true. But in the long run, PR usually helps with search terms. Thats how it was in my case.

But you're right, probably for more competitive search terms, it's harder.

Yes, but what I'm trying to say is, with the more links you have, no matter the text, it will get you higher pr. And a higher PR means higher results (In google that is)

I'm under the impression that we merely stated that PR is not based on "relevancy" factors such as outgoing page topic, page theme, etc.

The old school view is that PR does indeed contribute to a page's ranking in the SERPs, with PR as a modifier for other criteria.

Think in these terms: <ranking criteria> x <PageRank>

This certainly seems to apply to specific search terms.

Of course, anchor text is very powerful and can swamp other factors. However, the recent Florida update has very much complicated issues. Even PR and anchor text are no longer apparently the first deciding factors in the rankings for many general search terms now - they they may be invoked for the ranking of specific pages returned for those general terms, but not for deciding if those pages will even be considered for ranking.
