Image Optimization

I have hundreds of pictures on my web site, but when I do an image search on google (and yahoo) my pictures almost never come up. I have been starting to add more description to my pages to see if this will help, but nothing so far. Also I renamed some of my image folders months ago, but the old folder names are still showing (on the few images that do show up) and of course the images are not found. Any suggestions on getting all my images to show up would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I can tell you 2 things that I do. Name the images with your keywords that describe what the image is and put the keywords in the alt attribute for that same image. Hope this helps.

I've heard text before and text after an image really helps. Also, linking to the image from off site with they keyword in the anchor wouldn't be a bad idea.

I would agree I think the best thing you can do is make use of the Alt tag for your images to help the search engines figure out what it is.

Hi sania,

Try to include relevant 'alt' description. In addition, the only way for Google to know what your picture is about is through the surrounding text. Make sure your content is relevant to the pictures.

Also putting the images to the upper parts of each web page can help, just in the top pixels of your web page.

Putting images just down the page, below all the texts is not really recommended.

Surrounding text is huge, also I believe that the title of the page it's featured on, the h1 h2 h3 tags, everything will have an impact. (I have pictures ranked for keywords that are not in the url, the alt tag, or close to the pic).

I haven't seen anyone mention an image id ... that's a good idea.

But also, you need to be patient ... Google images only updates a few times a year

Google images used to be my single largest referrer as I had over 3800 images indexed there ... now only a few hundred - don't count too many eggs that may not hatch

Is it really effective to do put keywords on alt attribute? If i do this is it possible that my image/ photo will be visible on google image search?

Ok, i will list the things you need to do. This is what i do.
1. Put your KWs in your filename
2. Put your image in <img> tags.
3. Put your KWs in alt attribute of <img>(dont repeat it again and again. Make it natural that best describe the picture)
4. Putting your KWs in your URL might help too. Meaning the name of the folders where your pictures is located. (e.g. mysite.com/images/piglet/piglet-in-boots.jpg)
5. Make sure you used "-" than "_" in your filename and folder name
6. And the most important is the surrounding text. Make it descriptive for the image.(e.g. piglet is very funny when he wears boots...bla bla bla )

Hope that helps
