Nobody's going to stop using Google. The SERPs today are a mess - I'm still using it. More importantly, AOL and Netscape and other partners are still using it. Remember now - AOL wants to monetize search as much as possible as well. Up unitil now, their SERPs have been fairly relevant. That could mean that they made more money in the past with Overture/Ink combo. If they switched to G/Adwords and saw their revenues take a dive, they would be putting pressure on G to rectify the situation, no?

I would think this new update would do the reverse. I wonder how he or she was able to calculate the percentage in such a short period. I think they are jumping the gun here. Need to wait a few days then see what the math says

Well put John. The reason google can get away with favoring adwords is because regardless nobody is going to STOP searching on google.

In the short term maybe. But nobody can say that definitely. Toyota just surpassed all, car makers except GM. Where is Pan Am airlines? Why isn't IBM selling more PCs than all it's competitors. Why isn't Alta Vista still the number one search engine? Why are all the kids drinking Pepsi rather than Coca-Cola?
The world is full of companies who were once totally dominant and are sorry second best today. People sure as hell will stop using Google if the word gets around and other engines start to deliver better results.

Now, one other issue Google has to contend with is the people buying links and bombing their way to the top. Even phpBB, with PR10, is selling text links. Google sees this as thievery. If you want top placement, you need to pay Google. In fact, I'm sure Google sees all SEO income as stolen income that rightfully belongs to Google.
So how would you prevent these Google bombers from being successful? Google bombers use the perfect match. If you're a Google bomber targeting "Cheap ******", you use that exact anchor text everywhere, and you put it first thing in your page titles, in your H1 tags and in the body copy.
Not any more. In fact, not for a while now. Go do a search for "cheap ******" and check out all the factors. You'll see the right way to do SEO.

I am only talking about RIGHT this moment and this conversation. Not the future or what may come. Just as nobody can say definately that google is not going to be the powerhouse of the future, nobody can say google is not targetting adwords.
My opinion is just that my opinion based in the hear and now. I am not saying, and I am pretty sure John is not saying that google can screw with serps and continue to be the leader. What I am saying is google can do this now and still survive because they currently have enough dominance to adjust and compensate without losing masses of searchers.

Well after the florida update our www.storacingproducts.com lost its postion on the search "rc cars" from 10th to 200th round abouts! But since Friday we have moved up to 94th or somthing. So its a plus there! But having said that we have lost postions on other terms. Strange!

Google.de
Have you guys tried Google.de?
I have found out that all my keyword results for Google.com are gone, however, all my results are showing in Google.de.
I also notice one of my new sites has been indexed in Google.de which was never indexed in Google.com which may say that the Google.de results are newer.
I am thinking this is going to be the normal results shortly.
I dont know - but maybe it provides some hope for people, like myself, who lost everything on Google.com.

Ok, sorry if this has already been discussed but please bear with me:
I know there is some sort of update going on and unfortunately for me most of my main keywords have gone so downhill it's unreal! For others it hasn't changed.
Should I start panicking now or should I leave it a few days to see if things change (which I hope they do).
Also, I went to Google.de and my site shows up really high when searching for sites in germany - even though I am in the UK - does anyone know why?!?!
Cheers for any help!

1) Non of my sites are effected.
2) I don’t have inbound links pointing to my sites where I pay for PR
3) I don’t have inbound links on every page of a site
4) I use forum sign links
5) I dont use sub-domains
6) I only use 2 domains per website
7) Only one of my websites is on DMOZ

If Google were to be totally honest about it, they would make ATW #1 for "search engine". Google should be #1 for "PPC".

No, no, no. Not local rank. Do this search term: Seattle Hosting.
Or this: Suzuki Bikes
Filter, not localrank.

LocalRank devalues PR from internal sites - Hilltop decides which sites are going to be selected for a search term. Both are very different.
I'm sure I saw some element of LocalRank applied to Forums in Florida - but it was a background effect, and applied extensively, rather than to a specific set of terms. Some say it was already present, so maybe it was just being slightly tweaked.
The main Florida effect sppears to be "expert system" based - which could be Hilltop, or could be TSPR. Or it could be something else. But not LocalRank - not by itself.
LocalRank - aka LocalScore - is a completely different type of algo, and cannot justifiably account for the main Florida effects.
