Do you have a speculation about when Google will update?
  • Do you think there has been a backlinks update?
  • Do you think there has been a PR update?
  • Are you seeing Google fluctuations?
  • Do you think there has been an algorithm update?

Google Penguin Updated Again This Morning

On Friday December 5 Barry Schwartz reported on his blog that Google's Penguin was updated.

Quote:
the reversals seem to have been reversed and now sites hit are Penguin free, or at least some.

What is really interesting of late (at least as far as I've witnessed), in one case, geo-specific terms took a hit, and then some coveted generic terms rose to the Pos #3-#4 at roughly the same time. Geo terms came back last weekend almost to where they were before, and then disappeared after the weekend. Now they are starting back again. It feels like we're on a sailboat riding the crest of high waves, and then back down the other side, then back up to the top - over and over again.

Friday's Google Penguin Changes Revert Back Again

Nothing like driving marketers crazy at this time of year.
Quote:
Friday morning we reported more fluctuations around Penguin hit sites. Well, those changes seemed to have reverted themselves 24-hours later.

Google's mobile friendly icon goes international. So now in near future we probably will see mobile compatibility a ranking factor in algorithm. Wait and watch!

I have noticed for one of my website, keywords ranking are different in desktop and mobile devices. So I think Google has already considered mobile compatibility as one of the factor.

Google Says Penguin To Shift To “Continuous Updates”

Barry Schwartz got an answer from Google about the Penguin updates:
Quote:
A Google spokesperson has told us that they will now be updating the Penguin algorithm continuously, by optimizing it as they go. A Google spokesperson sent us the following statement around our recent questions about the holiday Penguin updates.

Quote:
That last big update is still rolling out — though really there won’t be a particularly distinct end-point to the activity, since Penguin is shifting to more continuous updates. The idea is to keep optimizing as we go now.
That definitely explains all the reports of Penguin changes we’ve been recently been seeing.

Which is it? Are they still rolling out, or have they stopped?

It would appear it may of stopped. In a post about Panda taking a holiday Barry Schwartz said:
Quote:
This has been the case for the most part around most algorithms since the Florida update in 2003. But with the case of Penguin's ongoing optimizations, I guess they didn't care there? Although, since December 6th, I have not seen Penguin shuffles.

Google Pigeon Algorithm Rolls Out Globally In English Locales

Anyone notice these changes?
Quote:
Google revamped their local search algorithm, we named Google Pigeon, in July of this year. It was a significant change to how Google ranked and ordered the local search results both for local queries in Google search, and within Google Maps.

This update, the Pigeon update, has officially rolled out worldwide in all English locales with the exception of India.

Google gave me confirmation yesterday on Search Engine Land and then later in the day, added that this was a roll out that is still happening to all English locales with the exception of India.

From my location, generic terms are #1. If I add a local geo-specific qualifier, positioning degrades a bit. Add a another geo-specific qualifier further away, and it degrades further. I've been noticing this fluctuation over the last month and will see if it settles and sticks as is.

This is the Google Update thread where we put notices of Google updates. If you are having a problem with your site,
  1. Read through the forums to see if someone else had a similar problem.
  2. If you start a new thread people need specifics on what the problem is to be able to help you.
