Disappearing links

I did a search but the results were fairly old, so hope a new thread might bring more relevant and up to date answers:

Back links; why do they disappear? Is there anything we can do to stop?

I understand sites may no longer be in operation and would account for a few links but the results I looked at for mine are showing around 80-100 links disappearing!

There are several reasons why the links disappear.

0. WMT 0 errors (first survey)

1. Sites linking to sites that Google "de-indexing". Gender, directories (of all kinds), free blogs, social bookmarks, .... etc. Almost everything is free.
2 links in comments. The owner decides to remove them.
3 links from forums. Whether it's signature or page user usually are removed, if not indexed.
4. links to various websites that disappear. The owner decides not to re-renew field.
5. links diverse (model wiki pages, press releases, stats, about, docs .... etc). the pages are deleted, or site structure changes (thema or new design).
6 .....

A strategy based on the links free SEO is Ongoing (continue)! Each realized in time that those links sooner or later disappear. Whether google cancel them, or simply are deleted, you need these links all the time, so keep somewhat profile links.

If after 1 year of 500 root eg, over 3 years, you can have 500 root. Why? that links disappear, whether or not add new ones, if you have proposed a number of X root, you should know that links disappear.

eg:
Year 1 win 500 root,
Year 2 win 500 root disappear in the year 400 1
Year 3 win 500 disappear in the year 500 2 100 1 year

total ~ 500.

The risk incurred when you choose to link free.

When you decide which project you started monetize and deserve to get serious about it, quitting free links and opt for quality. If no link increases from year to year. Stop interested, how many pandas penguins or wine, or what changes do google.

Yes, it is extremely difficult (expensive) to get quality links, but the decision depends on whether the project monetize or not, or how important the time spent in obtaining links for each.

Same explanation for do-follow and no-follow becoming in time.

There are dozens of examples of sites that were bound authoritarian google, type change in no-follow links. The investment of time or money in "winning" free links must be taken seriously, because there is the risk of losing time (cost) and money, most often, the amount is very high. Time is limited and very expensive.
