Themes
I'm not sure if I can do this but I think it's useful and we could discuss it here.
Ok, read the thread about themes here http://forums.seochat.com/t8018/s.html
What do you think?

Maybe I found something....
If you search for related sites to Google (I thought this would be the perfect themed site) you see that it shows 75% related and 25% sites that linked to it.
If you consider that Google has thousands of inbound links, then it's excelent the way they themed their site, showing lots of other search engines.
So, I'm enjoying this theory more every minute!
edited a few minutes later: One more thing. Everyone remembers that Google gets beated by Altavista for "search engine", right? Guess what, if you look in related sites for Altavista 100% are related sites so Altavista has a best themed site. I think that's the reason Altavista is #1 for that search.

It's an interesting proposition that rankings could be adversely affected by "non-relevant" linkage.
However, the "similar pages" feature has been there for a long time, and I've not seen any argument that it has any bearing on general search rankings.
Of course, that doesn;t mean to say it won't have any future impact.
Personally speaking, I see related-topic links as the future, full stop.
Btw - has SEO Chat been penalised by Google? It's base index PR is only 2.

Oops, I'll guess you just will have to register.
It's in the free Google News Forum but you need to be registered to see it.

Huh? Juliany, you are simply relinking to the original link you posted in a roundabout way. Please just link to original topics, and not topics elsehwere that discuss the same topic.
I noticed that WMW censored out "SEOchat" though.

I linked WMW too because I explained there what I (not 2k) think explains the difference between .com and .co.uk results versus .es, .de, .fr, .it, etc.
Also, some users asked questions about it and examples were made therefore.
And... C'mon!!! I have nothing to do with WMW. Just linking to it to find out more...

It was simply that it seemed to be covering the same ground.
As for the theme argument in itself - if you actually look at the difference between sites that were dropped, and siets that were not, it is possible to observe a general trend - that of an "expert" system in place.
That essentially means that the issue is much deeper than that of themes - you need backlinks from "on-topic" expert pages.
That's not a hard and fast rule, btw. Some of the SERPs at the moment are just plain crazy.

Topical Page Rank calculations, the way that google can continue to be the strongest Search Engine. Only assign page rank to sites that share a relevant topic. Not just an SEO linking sites.
