Well they usually do this when they view directories as link farms. Is you directory auto or manually moderated?

Web directories are of no use to anyone in the search results, so why would they not penalize them so that they are not in anyone's search results?

Check the quality of links you are accepting. Perhaps it has been loaded up with spam sites or the like (low quality sites).

Many spammers used web directories trying to get more backlinks and as a way to fight spams, google algorithm was harden. Maybe if you try to only allow high quality sites to sign up, you might get through.

There are many reasons why google penalize website, but for web directory it could be most likely because of too much outbound links, low quality content, spam links, etc.

Now a days most of the people try to submit their new website in the local directories, this will result in link in farming, so google will penalize such directories.

There's a solid reason.

Because they contains the links to different low quality and even very bad websites and blogs.

Maybe there are automated submissions or your site is spammed. It would be beneficial I think if you shift to other alternative, am I right or not?

The main reason why Google doesnt like web directories because they lack unique and valuable content - for the most part. Of course not all web directories do, but most do.

It depends on free directories that you are submitting....

Quote:
I chuckle every time people claim that directories are dead. In May 2012 Google deindexed a few hundred free directories.

If directory links didn’t work then why would they deindex them? Hint: they wouldn’t.

This matches my personal experience: links from the right directories can still do wonders for your site. And because web directories are seen as “old-fashioned” in the SEO world, you can usually get from aged domains for next to nothing.... by Brian Dean

DMOZ has 5 million outgoing links. Care to explain why that is not penalized?

it's because most directories were made only for links, not for people.

Dmoz has history so it's not penalised, as it comes from the time before all the spammers just made directories for links

May be your web directory has not been monitored for spamming and has been used for link spam so you need to strictly check for the spammers to make sure it is free of spam
