An update:
The numbers keep going up. And apparently 20% of them add it to their favorites. That's not too bad I guess. It's getting a good number of feed subscribers as well.
The click through rate on the ads is still higher than normal. I think it has to do with the fact that the visitors are transient... Anyways, I'm not complaining.

Google News is a major source of traffic for some of my sites, though timeliness and good luck are significant factors in how well GN works for us. If your article is on a popular topic it may very well be buried in the search results; it's rare to get a listing on the GN front page. However, as you've pointed out, it can be a great source of traffic.
NB, Google News only lists stories for 30 days, which favors those who update frequently.

I update multiple times per day (more stories=more traffic). And actually, I seem to be faring pretty well on topics that are kind of big with lots of other stories by other sources. The key is to be one of the first to get the story, then you float along the top and show up higher.
I've never gotten a front page listing so far (which is like nearly impossible), but I have gotten front page of the tech section

I know someone who did manage a front page listing for a little while (and a satire site no less)... he was only up there for about 15-20 minutes but managed 4000 clicks in that time.

That's great. I submitted a press release at PR.com about Japanese car auction for my client's company. It was picked up by Google News though I did not submit it. So it is not necessary to submit your news to Google News directly. PR.com worked well for me.
But the traffic I receive from Google news for that news article is not all that great - I think it depends on the keywords. Not many people will look for the word 'car auction' in Google News.

You have to create a good article or press release relevant to your site. To do that you need to study how others write first. There are many article directories and press release services which are free. But you will to go to those sites and become a member first. There are other automated solutions for submitting press releases and articles. Just google for terms like press release submitter or article submitter - most of these tools are semi automatic - so be prepared to spend your time !!

Studying how others write is not neccessary. Learn how to write good yourself, not by imitating others.

My movie site was accepted during the beta phase. I don’t think it had much of an effect on traffic as many people did not used it for movie information. The Email alerts are a good feature and you can put you site title in and just for kicks see what you get in you inbox. I wish the new articles would automatically appear in the main index but they don’t...if they did then that would have a significant effect on the traffic to Future Movies.

What do you mean by "main index"? Do you mean the main Google index, and not the Google News index?

Julie , so you're getting around 500 unique hits from people searching for news on google ? I'm a bit confused where it's coming from..
thanks , this is good info.

Actually its much more than 500 uniques per day now.... But yea, we're getting alot from people searching on Google News (but we also seem to be growing locally as well). Example, someone searching for "david beckham" might pull up one of our latest stories on him....or a search for "ipod" might pull up some of our stories. Google News shows a snippet, and the reader clicks the link to read the full story and is taken to our site.
I've since also been added to MSN / Live News (as of 10/30) as a news source, but it doesn't seem to drive nearly as much traffic as Google.

I honestly couldn't tell you. But they do look to see that you have some kind of editorial review process, and are an organization rather than an individual. Other than that, I don't know their criteria.
