Question Multiple Google Sitemaps?

Can anybody tell me if it is ok to have multiple google sitemaps.

Example

www.domain.com/sitemap.xml
www.domain.com/wp/sitemap.xml

why might i want to do this you ask.. because we have a wordpress blog at the second domain and it has a plugin that will auto create the sitemap every time something new is posted... however we have a regular Google sitemap. I suppose in a perfect works I would use the main sitemap and include everything, but the plugin that does it automatically is really a time saver. So what are the consequences of multiple sitemaps?

I've never used Google Sitemaps and also never had a problem getting pages indexed. Google Sitemaps is more for sites that have some kind of dificulty getting spidered and indexed. If you simply build a sitemap on your own site and link to it from at the least your home page and then have a blog sitemap you link to from the main page of your blog you should be fine.

As for the actual issue of submitting two sitemaps to Google. Does the plugin allow you to add the pages from the rest of your site. I would think there's a way to add those pages in the code for the plugin. That might be an option if it's possible.

I'm not sure if Google allows submission of multiple Sitemaps, but if they do I would think there would be no issue with having both. If they only allow one per site that would be an answer to yoru question too.

But again unless your site has put up some barriers to getting spidered you really don't need to submit a Google Sitemap. You can create your own HTML sitemap linked from your home page or even better all your pages and also use the WordPress plugin linked to from the pages of your blog and you should be fine.

I've got the same problem with my article exchange site. The VBSEO autogenerates a sitemap in the /forum folder. I had to make another "site" called in G sitemaps called "myurl.com/forum/" as well as "myurl.com" to have both sitemaps crawled by Google.

I was wondering the same, if it was a problem.. or considered spammy.

There are no problems having multiple google sitemaps. You could also add your RSS feeds to google webmaster center as a sitemap, to get your new pages indexed more quickly.

P.S. I've also noticed that yahoo also has something like webmaster tools at google. Check: siteexplorer.search.yahoo.com there you also can add sitemaps of your sites.

The Yahoo version isn't as good in terms of offering webmaster information like Google is doing (although Yahoo site explorer is great for checking out backlinks).

I would be concered that it would be percieved as spamming. It should only be necessary to have one Goole sitemap.

i never use any sitemaps and all my pages listed on Google, Yahoo, MSN and other search engines... Just organise pages on your website, try link them from each other. Also, don't build backlinks only for your homepage, build backlinks for other pages too and your site always will be indexed.

By the way, i know some websites who created 75% backlinks for iternal pages and only 25% for homepage. And they did it with success. Just remember to build backlinks from good PR pages for homepage, and another PR0-PR2 and pages with more than 50 links for your other pages.
