On the Hilltop or Localrank question, the SERPs being full of directories would point towards HT, however the recent preponderance of Japanese pages in some searches, would point towards LR.

The number of Japanese pages returned for "SEO" are bewildering, G must be ignoring the Japanese script and just reading the English, which would give astronomical KW density, and of course would also apply to their link text.

Either way, as neither scenario envisages their "experts" as being the results ultimately returned, we've a way to go yet.

Now I think you are splitting semantic hairs. I believe the subset is a preselected corpus of expert documents. And then a predefined number of these pages are used. Nonetheless the subset is predefined and in that sense so is the comparision set.

The way I see it, how it is derived is the crucial matter here.......
My guess is that the corpus is derived using some type of applied semantic tools. In that regard Local Rank is proably more sophisticated than Hilltop. Hilltop proposed designating some types of documents or sites as expert, such as directories.

But Bob, where do you see pre-selection mentioned in either?
Pre-determined, yes, selected, yes, pre-selected, no.
I may seem to be splitting hairs, but pre-selection implies a separate step I see no mention of.

That really is semantics. What you are predetermining is surely the selection criterion. So while you may not be saying, site A and not site B. You certainly are saying all sites that meet this set of predetermined standards will be included.

I guess the point you are making is that be simply predetermining the criterion the actual subset that is finally used -- selected -- can changed as sites are added and modified to meet the predetermined criterion.

Whereas preselected might be seen as a static set of sites.

Exactly!
Don't forget, pre-determined was the NUMBER of documents that would be returned as "expert".

Anyway, this is just my "best case" scenario on what's been going on at G, it could very well just be broken ;-)
