Personal experience. I got 200% more visitors from Google.

I used to build backlinks only for my homepage. In August i had 200 people comming directly from Google. But the problem was... Google never indexed only 20% of my pages (some of them)
In the end of August i went throught all my pages, organised them by topics, found related sites, forums, communities, directories. For every page i started to build backlinks (the same way like it is another website ). It was little hard, most directories don't like iternal pages.
By the end of september 99% of my pages were indexed in Google and i have 700 people a month from Google (october). Moreover, it is not only for google, i got more visitors from Yahoo, MSN, Ask... even some local, internationa search enginees i don't know.

I have also found that it helps to get backlinks for internal pages. The only problem is that I prefer not to do it for my site as there are well over 200,000 internal pages in my site.

It will take me a good few years plus my internal pages can change and become 404's and things. So I prefer to just do the main home pages of each sub domain and main domain and then hope that other people will link to the internal pages. Although, saying this, I may start doing some internal linking on some other sections of my site that are internal pages only because they are nearly ranking near the top and I think that a few backlinks to that individual page will the place it further near the top or even better, at the top.

I know... 404 is bad thing for sites who use php (Nuke, PostNuke, Joomla...)
Once your story went to archive, it becomes 404 and doesn't matter how many webmasters linked it from forums, articles and their blogs... You can't control it! But if you make static pages, remember... once in a while leave links in forums such as "read this article" if someone really need.

It's not necessary to have links to every page of a website to help it get indexed fully, having a nicely designed sitemap with links to important pages and then from those pages to other innes ones, can be of great help.

How do you know if google indexed more of your pages because of the backlinks OR because you organised your site???

Send a message via Yahoo to Blazed
that's really nice to see that your site got crawled fully. Now try to increase the backlinks with your desired keyphrase as anchor text.

Somethimes it is hard to organise website and place all links closer to homepage.
If you create backlink for page 2 clicks away, you give credit to your homepage (99% you link your homepage from every page of website) and other pages which already 3 clicks away from your homepage.
it really helps to spread google Pagerank across your site. Also, it makes your life easier to exchange links with another webmasters.

If you have some incoming links to main "hubs" of your website, an <forum rules> could probably help ensure the rest gets indexed as well.

It mean that you should build backlinks for pages with good content and links to another pages.
Just try to see which pages could be even another website with another domain name.
