Google Local Pack Results Algorithm & Ranking Update
Any of you doing local SEO notice this? Has the update been good for you?
Quote:
Looks like we got a big update going on, this one in the Google local pack results. The local SEO community is going pretty hot around these changes saying the new local results found in the local pack are mostly different. Some are saying this is the biggest change in a long time to the local rankings.

Early Signs Of A Google Core Search Algorithm Update
So anyone else noticing an update going on?
Quote:
It has been almost a month since we reported Google ranking changes, which is rare and it looks like many folks are seeing changes in the core web search results as of early this morning. This is unrelated to the major local ranking changes I reported this morning, which kicked off yesterday. The core web search changes seem to be just happening as of this morning.

The Weekend Update Was Not Penguin 4.0
There is still speculation there was a Google update over the Labour Day weekend but it wasn't a Penguin update:
Quote:
Google's John Mueller said a few minutes ago on YouTube Live around 5 minutes into the video that the weekend update rumors are not Penguin related. So he said you can "rule out" Penguin in terms of saying the Penguin algorithm was updated this weekend.
John Mueller went on to explain, which he did on Twitter yesterday that Google is constantly updating. But again, this update was not at all related to Penguin.
So the weekend update that is still unconfirmed by Google that kicked off Friday morning still has no explanation.

Even More Google Algorithm & Ranking Update Chatter
More rumblings about a possible Google update:
Quote:
A week ago Friday, September 2nd, we reported on a Google algorithm update, which turned out to be seen by the vast majority of SEOs and webmasters out there. Now I am seeing some more early chatter, it is unclear if it is related to that September 2nd update or if it is something else. If I had to guess, I'd say it is tweaks to whatever Google did on September 2nd....
...many many emails and direct messages about a potential Google update in the past 12 hours....

Google Search Algorithm Update Chatter On Fire
Are you noticing any update?
Quote:
Something is going on and it is getting bigger and bigger as time goes on. On September 2nd we reported significant changes in the Google search results, it seems Google did an unconfirmed Google algorithmic tweak but they said it was not Penguin. Then Tuesday we reported another shift in chatter which now seems to be escalating over the past 24 hours...

Google AMP In Core Mobile Results Fully Live?
Anyone seeing this?
Quote:
In early August we reported Google is bringing AMP pages to the core mobile search results. Google never told us when this would happen exactly but it seems to have gone live today/tonight.
Many folks are now seeing it for ordinary searches in Google while on their mobile devices. AMP pages would only show on mobile results, so that makes sense...

Are You Seeing Huge Traffic Surges From Google AMP Since Thursday?
More news on AMP:
Quote:
I've been hearing some chatter here and there around some sites that have deployed AMP, accelerated mobile pages, are seeing huge surges in traffic from the In The News box.
The thing is, I am personally seeing this as well. On Friday and yesterday, I saw massive bursts of traffic from that In The News carousel...

Penguin is now part of our core algorithm
News right from Google:
Quote:
...After a period of development and testing, we are now rolling out an update to the Penguin algorithm in all languages. Here are the key changes you'll see, which were also among webmasters' top requests to us:
•Penguin is now real-time. Historically, the list of sites affected by Penguin was periodically refreshed at the same time. Once a webmaster considerably improved their site and its presence on the internet, many of Google's algorithms would take that into consideration very fast, but others, like Penguin, needed to be refreshed. With this change, Penguin's data is refreshed in real time, so changes will be visible much faster, typically taking effect shortly after we recrawl and reindex a page. It also means we're not going to comment on future refreshes.
•Penguin is now more granular. Penguin now devalues spam by adjusting ranking based on spam signals, rather than affecting ranking of the whole site.

Google officially launched Penguin 4.0. Now your websites affected by spam signals, rather than affecting ranking of the whole site.

Search Results are officially AMP’d
Official word from Google on AMP pages:
Quote:
Along with many others in the open source Accelerated Mobile Pages Project, we’ve been working to make the mobile web experience faster. In February, we launched AMP in the “Top Stories” section of Google Search, delivering news in a fast and reliable way. In August, we previewed linking to AMPs across the entire mobile search results page. Today we’re excited to announce that we’re rolling out that faster experience to users across the world.
Now when you search on your mobile device, you’ll see a label that indicates a page is AMP’d. This doesn’t change Search results but will show you which sites have pages that are ready to load lightning fast.
