new Image format, named WebP

Google is working on a new image format for the web. Unfortunately, it is not yet implemented in most of the browsers.

Quote:
WebP lossless images are 26% smaller in size compared to PNGs. WebP lossy images are 25-34% smaller than comparable JPEG images at equivalent SSIM quality index.
Quote:
Lossless WebP supports transparency (also known as alpha channel) at a cost of just 22% additional bytes. For cases when lossy RGB compression is acceptable, lossy WebP also supports transparency, typically providing 3 smaller file sizes compared to PNG.

Hi,

Well, it is not actually new. The problem is that it is not widely supported. I suggest skipping it, at least for now.

How to use this new image format? Do you have some sample images?

Read the blog post and the thread creator does not own the blog that's linked in the thread.

It haven't been widely supported for all these years because it was under RC development. Few months ago Apple and Mozilla announced about implementations... It's also on W3C working draft:

It will used widely very soon.

On the Web, images constitute almost 60% of average page weight. To optimize for billions of users, WebP image formats compress better for lossless and lossy compression — potentially resulting in images more than 25% smaller than JPEG formats..... The format is fully supported from Android 4.2.....
