Further context was added with the announcement that emoji will appear “where relevant, useful and fun,” and we can expect to see more of them in future. This will apply to both desktop and mobile results.

A search for something as on the nose as [emoji] reveals how we can expect some results to look:

Youth today (the snapchat generation) hardly communicate without using emoji. I once read an article that teenagers in Japan exclusively use emoji to communicate - in a way that outsiders may not understand!

Quote:
First of all, it is worth noting that Google clearly wants to ring-fence this capability
Ring fence is perhaps the most relevant word in the whole article. Without emoji, one can assume that Google will slowly lose touch with the snapchat generation. So it's important to ring-fence them.

Then again, anything Google does has an advertising angle. The ultimate plan undoubtedly is to let advertisers make use of emoji to connect with the youth.

I think you misunderstand the thing.
Its not about searching for emoticon search terms.
Its more to increate the click through rate because your website is highlighted with emoticons in the serps

It says added when appropriate, so I am assuming they will be in full control of it and won't let everyone use it for the sake of using it.

You can use emoji as variables & constants in the swift programming language, so why is emoji in SERP such a big deal?

I know I would find a whole search page filled with emojis to be distracting when I'm trying to look for something.

i agree with you when you see that emoji all over the search result then search result will look like a mess. I am sure they will remove it when marketers start abusing it.

Google probably thinks that most people wouldn't or they wouldn't have made the change.

I wasn't aware about this new change by Google. Also I have been searching and surfing but I haven't come across a search result with emojis.

Also, it would look very cluttered with emojis all over. And Yes, some SEO guys might start manipulating result. Although I am not sure how this will impact SEO results and rankings
