Competitors buying dodgy backlinks

I have noticed one of my competitors comes up for the keyword I am planning to target so I checked their backlinks and they have thousands from dodgy sites (obviously not done properly).

They are from Russian gambling sites, sites about men's health and various other weird albeit authoritative websites(they're conveyancers).

I have reported them to Google, but does anyone have any experience of reporting obviously dodgy backlinks? Does it work?

Thanks! I am doing, it's just really frustrating when you're trying to do things the proper way!

I want to show my content writer some articles for her to see the correct writing style, do you have any suggestions?

For all you know another competitor has spammed his link profile. Try and find which authority links they have and see if you can get them too.

There is no way that the site you speak of his ranking pages due to 'dodgy' links, Penguin would have bitten by now and discounted any juice they may have passed.

I find the whole reporting links scene very sad. Just concentrate on your own back yard.

As is the nature of the 'game' nowadays.

Just think of SEO as the race between the hare and the tortoise.

ha yep! It's a snowballer! Once you've got a big site with a lot of authority it just keeps gathering more naturally. When you're starting out, it's very tricky to beat the big guns! I've got a few ideas up my sleeve though! (all white hat stuff!)

I think Mr. Penguin prefers developed countries & chooses to ignore us developing ones. I've seen plenty of sites here rank on the basis of a truckload of low quality links. Take my own area for instance. There are hardly any sites which try to rank on the basis of good content. Most are on account of directory submissions & other such grey hat techniques.

I had wondered about this.

I suppose in a few years time it may change and those that have credible link profiles will benefit greatly.

The op is Uk based (My place of birth Sheffield!) though, so his competitors won't likely be from your part of the world as we don't see sites from India etc in our serps hardly, if at all.

Maybe his competitors have unwittingly contracted their work to someone living outside of Mr. Penguin's area of interests & those contractors are just going about their business as usual.

you need to report 50 times, not just once.

Yes but his competitor would be beholden to the algorithm within the UK framework. So his site wouldn't rank over here.

As you said Penguin has no effect in India, to your knowledge, but we are taking of a UK/US competitor. If the links are bad the Penguin will bite.

We seem to have now gone full circle.

How far up are his competitors ranking anyway? If they're ranking at say position 60 then I don't suppose algorithms would be too bothered to send them back to position 65 or 70.

Besides, conveyancers seems like a highly niche area so there may not be too many people trying to rank on the basis of good content & quality backlinks. If there's a paucity of the good stuff then search engines would have no choice but to rank on the basis of whatever is available.

This has nothing to do with the thread and makes me think you are just posting for count.
