In an expert system, it's not so much how many links you have, as much as who is linking to you: so lots of links from lots of related-topic sites would be more important, than lots of links from just one or two off-topic sites.

There's still a lot of discussion as to whether Google is now running an expert system, to what degree it's been applied, and also as to the shape such a system may have.

Basically the simplest mantra would be the same: get links to your site - but preferably keep on-theme.
