How have you dealt with link penalties?

I got an error, my site just came up on page 1 yesterday but today I can not find it in the top 100, actually I thought my website was penalized even though there was no webmaster notification.
So How have you dealt with this?

Probably you might not get the first position. And if your site were there and now it's not in 100 then you must wait for few days and check whether. your site would be on 1st page or not.

We see this type of question here, time and time again. And, the same thing: no background, no admittance to any wrong-doing - nothing. How do you expect anyone to answer your issue, when you've basically posted no details??

I think the best way to recognize them is simply the analysis of your drop in visitors, then you must check the signs for recent google updates, after you know which penalty has affected you, you can simply reverse the process and remove those spammy links. Hope that helps

Ranking fluctuations are just normal. You must understand that there are continuous changes in every search engine's algorithms and your competitors are also optimizing their sites as well. So it is normal to rank number one and then the next day you're not in the top 100, and then go back to number one and so on. These are just normal changes.

If I remember correctly, only manual penalties show in the google webmaster tools. So an algorithmic "penalty" (which is not really a penalty) might be to blame here. Most likely due to bad backlink profile.
But I want to ask, have you really been on page one? Or were you watching some personalized search results and it showed on page one only on your computer. Did you traffic from search engines actually dropped?

If you ask me, I would start all over again. It is possible to recover from a penalty, but it takes so much time and effort, that you can also invest your time in a new and fresh project.

Google recently released a update, called a fred up, it was about poor backlinks and black hat seo, if you were using these techniques, then you must have notice drop down in in your ranking and visitors.

Huh? Google has always had algo properties about bad links and other Black Hat tactics, and may have released updates to that tune around the time of Fred's release. However, in terms of Fred being a link algo update, not according to Search Engine Land. It was much more than that.

Search Engine Land

In many cases, the content is wrapped around ads, where often the ads are a bit hard to differentiate from the content. In other cases, there are fewer ads or no ads, but rather there is revenue generation through affiliate models, lead generation or other avenues.

This is not to say that other sites were not also hit over other issues, such as link penalties or other algorithms Google may have released around the same time frame. There were definitely a handful of sites that did not match the rest of the batch. So I am not saying all sites that saw ranking declines on March 8 were hit by this “Fred” update, but most were.

As someone said above, ranking fluctuations are normal, especially if your domain is new. Here's an article for reference https://moz.com/blog/ranking-fluctuations
