Another google mystery

I can't figure out how and why, but this is what happened:

I made a website and some weeks before it was finished i took a look at the competition for a particular word. I noticed the top 3 sites had hidden keywords and i reported it to google. Months later those sites dropped some places but were still in the top 10. In the mean time i was on 14. the next time i looked, all commercial sites for that word dropped to 70 and higher. I was on 86 or something. The next day all the old sites were back in the top 10 and i was back on 14. The same switch keeps happening regularly (every other day or something) for the last couple of weeks. Today i looked and all commercial sites were completely dissapeared.
Could it be that someone from google took a look at my spam report and - to save some work - banned all of the top 70 sites?

Haha, no, that wouldn't be fair. Rankings have been changing a lot over the past few weeks, due to a new or changed algorithm.

Google Mystery? You make me feel like some sort of Scooby Doo in answering.

As for the yo-yo SERPs - I'm afriad it's not all too uncommon these days, and is a particular consequence of Google updating its listings. It almost certainly won't be the last time you see that happen, either.
