There's still no sign that an update has started when checking the backlinks. Google does a rolling update of the index and normally includes new stuff in the serps. My guess is that you've seen the effect of the rolling update, which seems to pass through the database like a wave - shuffling the rankings in one part while the rest remains steady, and then moving on to another part, and so on.
