Yeah, they offered it for free to get advertisers to invest more in AdWords primarily... Yahoo's doing the same thing by buying Indextools and Microsoft Gatinaeu is also intended to boost interest in their Adcenter platform...
On top of that - if publishing sites who use AdSense use Google Analytics to get more traffic, then they'll get more impressions for AdWords clients and publishers will be happy with more clicks (if they know what they're doing).
GA is more a blessing than a curse for now I'd say...
