Massive drop in the listings

Has anybody noticed an effect on their SERP positions since around 15th/16th September 2017?

I read on here and elsewhere there may have been an algorithm update but with only minor fluctuations mostly reported, with things readjusting after.

I literally went from bottom of 1st page to middle of 4th page for a key search term over night. Not ideal.

It's possible an automated penalty was issued I guess but can't think of an obvious reason.

I notice an adjustment downward on several keys - between 1 to 7 positions from gains made about a month ago.

Google giveth - and Google taketh away.

Yep it certainly does. Fortunately I don't rely on the website in question for my main source of business.

Do you know if the mechanics of the algorithm updates get published at some point? I'd be keen to know that information.

I don't rely on SERPs either. I honestly think they (Google) try things (adding, modifying or whatever to the algo) with little insight in terms of what's really going to happen.

It's like "let's throw pizza dough against the wall and see how much of it sticks" to determine if our dough is better or not.

Back to earth. For me, ranking across the board went way up on the 18th. Today, most of those gains are gone, except for a couple of keys that have improved even more. And those keys are ones I'd consider the most important, so there's some good that's come out of their weird algo update.

Google must identify these weaknesses in its algorithms and make the updates. Something must be really wrong though to get hit hard.

If you ever want a glimpse into the future as to what your ranking will be in a month when Google finally gets off it's a$$ and updates stuff, just look at duckduckgo

Some aspects of the algorithm updates seem a tad unethical to me. One update can take out an online business by dropping it off the 1st page. Even if they have used legitimate SEO tactics.

If a site has been shaped and coded and "SEO'ed" following Google's guidelines, why would it tank? For the most part, only sites that circumvent G's guidelines would be affected by algo updates.
