Here's a good article about determining whether you're in the sandbox and if you are what steps to take to get out of it:
http://www.seomoz.org/articles/sandbox-march-filter.php
IMHO, getting out of the sandbox all boils down to getting trusted links.

Try this sandbox checker
Maybe it is a myth but some programmers have gone through some good programming time to build sandbox tools. IMO you can call it the sandbox or whatever you want but when you try to position a new website into a niche or industry; you subsequently get penalized for being new.

I have never had that happen, so I seriously doubt that it is an automatic filter for new sites.

Hmmmm, yeah I believe thats part of how the engineers programmed the algo to keep spammers and fly by night adwords people out of the serps. Especially on high profile terms like weightloss and film production. Google's not going to let a website into the top 10 for either term if its less than a year old.

No you are not sandboxed. Your site http://www.costa-blancarentals.com/ appears LISTED in google.
http://www.google.com/search?q=costa...&start=10&sa=N
You also have a green bar with a PR of 3, but you do have the worse header design I have ever seen. I don't want to offend you, but make that header smaller or people will belive there's nothing on your site! No one is supposed to guess that they should scroll down to see your content.

I think the sandbox is very real. During the sandbox period, you simply cannot rank well on your important keywords no matter how much SEO you do. Once the sandbox is lifted (typically 8-12 months), your site suddenly shoots up to the first page.

Agreed and its an actual term invented by someone from outside of Google.
The term Sandbox doesnt even exist within Google so why are all these experts keeping stating it? I still wait for the day for Google to say, yes sites do get sandboxed and in those words!
There is a filter that a site can hit but not all sites get flagged - its not a sandbox and it is not called sandbox.

This has not happened on any of my sites ever, so I am simply saying it cannot possibly be something that is automatic for new sites. I am not saying it isn't possible that something triggers some sort of filter that causes what you are discussing, but I do not believe being a new site is the only criteria. It has to go far beyond that because there are far too many people who have never experienced this "filter" on any of their sites.
I still stand by my comment concerning this issue in a similar thread recently. Just my humble opinion.
