Google: Most Websites Rank Without Any Link Building

A point to consider when deciding where to invest your time, energy and money. Quality content your readers want the share vs link dropping:

Did you know that most websites listed and ranking on Google rank without building a single backlink? John Mueller of Google said on Twitter that "most" websites rank without building a single backlink...

Once again they have thrown a veil over the real topic and once again, get by with an obscure answer that can be taken many different ways. It's like a game of teasing, and they probably laugh and joke about it over coffee.

The best way to describe Mueller's answer?:

Totally Agreed... normally every first website which ranks on google for a particular query has always lesser number of backlinks as compare to rest of the listing which appears on first page..

I have checked several website and found that top ranking site has lesser number of backlinks as compare to rests...

Agreed. Some times it may show spam link that redirects to another domain altogether with totally different subject! That too for popular keywords and in first page of search results.

Today the most important parameter for Google is relevancy, not backlinks.

Absolutely right, Web sites can rank even without backlinks. My friend has a web apps website and he hasn't build backlinks manually. Still, his site ranks well and have good Alexa rank. He always tells me to focus on Content.

I have seen spammy sites with absolutely NO original content rank in the top 10 of google. These sites have some kind of RSS posting bot set up that skims articles from other sites, then links back to the original.

So why does a snip of an article rank well, but the original article does not?

I have been working on my blog for 10 years, and it barely gets any traffic. That is 10 years of trying to post good content, videos, pictures... everything I think google wants. Yet google sends very little traffic to the site.

I honestly think that if a site has content the people at google disagree with, such as conservative news, hunting, guns... etc, google will discredit the site.

Google is like an elephant's tusk, the chewing teeth and the show off stuff is different... As LMD said, they probably laugh over coffee.

One of my competitors shows few backlinks and still ranks very well. Looking at the site, there is not much original content. The main difference with this competitor is he has youtube videos with links directly to various pages on his site.

H2 rider try doing the same thing post videos and link to pages on your site eacxh video relates to.

Content is king but some links will drive traffic even if they do not help your site in google results.

I think google concerns about content quality, loading speed, and security. if you have all these three qualities then you can also see your site on the top.
I don't think you should blame Google.

Then something is seriously wrong! Google considers the age of a site.

It also considers content and speed.
  • Is your site mobile friendly? That is, does it not only look good on a mobile but does it load quickly on a mobile?
  • Are your images responsive? That is, do you have various sizes on your server, with only the smallest being loaded on a mobile?
  • Does the first sentence on each page, or first couple of sentences, sumarise the content of the whole page?
  • Do you know what page visitors arive on, what pages they look at, and what pages they leave on?
  • Have any of your site visitors, found it interesting enough to tell others or provide a link back to your site from their social media or own website?

If the answer to any of the above questions is 'no', then you can hardly blame Google.

If you search Google's own webmaster pages you will find plenty of other questions you should ask yourself, but it is very unlikely an individual from Google is responsible for your placement (they don't have the time or inclination) so it is far more likely that your site does not perform very highly in some way when compared automatically against their algorithm.
