It depends on how you do it. If you do it properly, it can provide very reasonable results.

Just have in mind that google likes quality and not spam. Build your web 2 up like real website and please dont post your first article with a link back to your own site, that's a big red flag

Yes, they do help in your site rankings, if they are able to get good traffic.

Web 2.0

yes, web 2.0 is helpful in ranking. Web 2.0 allows the creation of blogs, wikis, media content upload and social network sites. Users can provide the data that is on a Web 2.0 site and exercise some control over that data.
Web.20 is more helpful in content marketing because it give freedom to use more content with video and audio features

Regarding social networking sites helping with ranking:

If you stop worrying about whether Web 2.0 sites improve you ranking immediately and used them to build your authority, branding and an audience with good content over time with quality content your efforts could lead to incoming links from sites other than Web 2.0 sites.

You can only get a nofollow link from most of the web 2.0 websites (not all of them). It won't hurt though

Hey, don't think as web 2.0, it's a content marketing platform, so if you use for content marketing it will help to rank your keywords.

It's actually kind of an unknown at this point

Backlinks are still king Google just doesn't want people to know that

The talking heads at Google have always said good links are good (a few you build, but mostly ones you earn), and warn those people that set out to "build links" - mostly the fluff kind, or bad links, or even having someone get a bunch of junk links for some cash.

So, you can take with they say to heart, or with a grain of salt. However, most of the smart members here, always advocate to avoid link-building and strive for great content, and then "working it" to your advantage.

Sure, some links may help a bit and some links may even help out a lot - or some may "tank" a site. The trouble is, finding out "which is which", and where to get them (the good ones, that is). The so-called link-builders are the ones that are rolling the dice with unsuspecting "clients" (and I use that term very loosely here) that are paying them for their questionable work.

And at a time when I thought that G getting rid of the PR tool bar would eliminate the link-building frenzy, it just keeps going on, and on and on and on...

Yes, they will help rank your site a lot as long as you create fresh content and good quality links back to your site.
