Cycle for SERP updates?

There's another thread talking about the current PR and back link updates for Google.

This has me wondering, are Google SERP updates continuous? Or are they done on some sort of periodic cyclic, e.g. once a week or once a month?

The way I understand it they are always doing a series of small tweaks, and there is no major updates anymore.

Based on observations and some articles I've read from Google blogger Google SERP updates continuously.

Good to know.

I'm looking into hiring someone to do SEO for me, and I was wondering whether the results should be noticeable in the short term (e.g. within a month) or longer term (e.g., 3-6 months).

Based on the responses, and assuming varying crawl rates and indexing updates, is it correct to assume that the changes should be noticeable within a month?

[ Of course, this assume the SEO pro knows what they're doing.]
