Please explain - Search for "search engine" on Goo

Can anyone please explain why:
When I search for "search engine" on Google http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&i...=search+engine , the results show Google places number 6.

It also has more links pointing to it than the 1st through 5th result. I thought Google places a high priority on links. Why do the other web sites place higher than Google (in a Google search).

Do you mean to say that more people link to the excite.com website with the term search engine than link to Goole with the term search engine. That doesn't seem possible? Does it?

very possible..
people link Excite with Excite Search Engine because it is not as identifiable as Google is. People just need to link google w/ the text google for people to know what it is.

The same would have to be true for alatvista, dogpile, lycos, and searchenginewatch.

Google only finds 15900 links going to dogpile but finds 302000 links going to Google.

I guess it could be true the all of dogpiles say search engine and fewer than 15900 of googles say search engine. I guess "hats off" to dogpile.

That's true. That one is a no brainer.

Thanks for taking an interest in answering my question.
