Google related sites are not related

Hi;

I have question about G related sites which you can find with related:sitename.com .

I have and turkish article site (this site is in my sig.) . I have checked related sites for this site . I saw that they are not related .

G says

*one myspace site (english)
*one resume site (english)
*free wallpaper download site (english)
*one mp3 download site (turkish)
etc.


I have 2 question about this .

* does related sites effect ranking ?

* how does google select the related sites ? (i think related sites are related with linking structure but i dont link to any of these site )

google only shows small portion of backlink site. refer to the header bar that shows the number of backlink insteed.

I used to buy links from TLA's .edu links. I noticed G started showing our related or similiar sites were the ones listed next to our site in the TLA link purchase. Now I do what ever I can to keep my link from being next to a site that has completely nothing to do with mine.
