Protect your SERPS
I am tired to hear from webmasters questions like "Why my positions dropped in 1 day?". Most of them believe that their website was punished for something.
In most cases, positions drop happen because Google change algoritm and change values of links, pagerank, content, and other factors. It mean, that google never punished your site, your site became a victim of changes which Google (or other search engine) maid to improve results.
How to protect:
Once you got good positions and traffic, you should go back and analyze how you promoted your site.
For example.
1) You submitted your site in 500 directories and wrote many articles. In this case you can drop if Google will decide to decrease value of directory links.
In this case change your stategy and avoid future directories submission, get some links from forums, find bloggers to link your site, exchange some links, get highter pr links, find content links etc...
2) You bought many links from hight Pagerank sites and they mostly located in the footer, or with other sponsored links. You can drop if Google will decide to decrease pr value a little and concentrate on content and anchor.
In this case, do some directories submission, article, forums, bloggers etc....
Remember... to avoid drops, you should have all types of links with different anchor from different sites.

Im confused for diff reasons.... since my directory was 2 mo. old it gains serp in diff. key words or categories almost every spider or bot.
The scary part is WHY, because in all of honesty i dont know why its happening or what provokes it to do what it does.
If any one has had this same expierience, and knows why please tell me, because its nice to keep adding #1 categories, and key word position, but its confusing when you dont know what your doing to make it happen.

Good point, sniperhiga.
rankland,
it depends what the keywords you are #1 for are, if they are popular/competitive or not. We'd need more details than you've given to judge your situation.

Moreover, because SERPs fluctuate, people can find their sites ranked top1 (or so) after 2 weeks of top10 absence. It usually happens to phrases which are "new" for each site (new articles, new forum topics, etc, etc).

Directories submissions or links from articles is a danderous thing. You can get on top while your links on top... front page, latest news, new links etc. But later this links and articles will be removed and placed in archieve which 10 clicks away from homepage....

It is possible to drop quite a bit just from losing a few higher PR links. If you have bought some, try to hang on to them.

...traffic is better than a few clicks. Unless you got a good position for something that is not searched very much.

SEM is a continous process
Thats a nice piece of explanation.
But, I consider that Search Engine Marketing should be a continuing effort. It's not like a burger you take to satisfy your hunger, and that's it, you have to do nothing. Soon after some time, you will feel hungry again. If the competition is high, then you will continuously feel hungry.
Therefore, I think each company should have Internal SEO personnel or team for their SEO effort rather than blaming companies to which they outsourced their SEO jobs to.
