PR is important for google only. I think PR plays a major part in google AdSense. the higher the PR the more the payout.

Do you have any - any - proof to support this idea?

PR will be important as long as Google will be the top search engine where webmasters rely a lot on their PR at every PR update. Higher PR will not give you good SERP but that will definitely attract backlinks. Once a particular page is loaded with these valuable links then by default your site will also come on top in the SERP's, so PR will always have value.

Yeah, PR is by no means the most important element, but it definitely matters. I wouldn't chase it exclusively, but I wouldn't ignore it either.
As was also pointed out, the more links you obtain, the greater your PR becomes, so a higher PR is an indirect benefit of a successful backlink building campaign.

Even though the opinion is divided, personally i feel that PR is imporatant only for getting backlinks/reciprocal links from higher PR sites. It doesn't have any impact on lower PR sites.

I have to agree that I really dont think PR is as important as many people think.
For one thing I always said google really dont like SEO's so why would they make a tool like PR to HELP them.
Saying PR is UBER important is a little extreme. I see many site that have lower PR than me PR 3- Pr 2 Pr4 that rank higher than me.
PR my be a little part of optimization as well as links as well
>>A huge part of your placement in the search results is based on your incoming links. Those incoming links tend to increase your PageRank. As your position increases in the search results (based in part on the incoming links) you will see more traffic, so in my humble opinion, it is a bit misleading to tell people that PageRank it isn't all that important.<<<
Now to say LINKS is a HUGE part i think is wrong as well
My site has more links than most of the top 10 sites and yes good anchor and much better themed as well..
So all this is just assumption I think and no one really knows what google is looking for
Cause if it was links and PR I would be on top pages :-)

Google tell us pretty point blank...

How can I improve my site's ranking?
Sites' positions in our search results are determined based on a number of factors designed to provide end-users with helpful, accurate search results. In general, webmasters can improve the rank of their sites by increasing the number of high-quality sites that link to their pages. For more information about improving your site's visibility in the Google search results, we recommend reviewing our webmaster guidelines. They outline core concepts for maintaining a Google-friendly website. http://www.google.com/support/webmasters/bin/answer.py?answer=34432&topic=8524
PageRank relies on the uniquely democratic nature of the web by using its vast link structure as an indicator of an individual page's value. In essence, Google interprets a link from page A to page B as a vote, by page A, for page B. But, Google looks at more than the sheer volume of votes, or links a page receives; it also analyzes the page that casts the vote. Votes cast by pages that are themselves "important" weigh more heavily and help to make other pages "important."
Important, high-quality sites receive a higher PageRank, which Google remembers each time it conducts a search. Of course, important pages mean nothing to you if they don't match your query. So, Google combines PageRank with sophisticated text-matching techniques to find pages that are both important and relevant to your search. Google goes far beyond the number of times a term appears on a page and examines all aspects of the page's content (and the content of the pages linking to it) to determine if it's a good match for your query. http://www.google.com/technology/index.html.

I think Pr is very important.A PR9 site against a PR7 site optimizing for the same keywords. The winner is clearly the Pr9 site.

Those who deny that PageRank matters are those who fail to rank well and espouse such lies in order to feel better about their failures.

Julie I dont think so.
I have page like this cart.asp PR4, there is nothing on it, I have pages with nice articles PR2.
Once again I don't care about PR, because it doesn't reflect the hard work.
Only traffic matters.
