Google's Vanessa Fox outlines issues concerning duplicate content:

Google wants to serve up unique results and does a great job of picking a version of your content to show if your sites includes duplication. If you don't want to worry about sorting through duplication on your site, you can let us worry about it instead.
Duplicate content doesn't cause your site to be penalized. If duplicate pages are detected, one version will be returned in the search results to ensure variety for searchers.
Duplicate content doesn't cause your site to be placed in the supplemental index. Duplication may indirectly influence this however, if links to your pages are split among the various versions, causing lower per-page PageRank.

Strange how everyone harps on about duplicate content, and getting all worked up about it. Turns out nothing happens anyway with google.

Would be interesting to do a test for a non competative word and create 2 pages to rank on that word but change one of them a little bit and see who comes up in serps.

I just don't get it. I continue to see a vast amount of near duplicate content in the supplemental pages.

Peter, what do you say about this? I noticed that many duplicate pages land in the supplemental index and now we learn that this doesn't happen? This is really strange. I don't know who to believe anymore.

I think the key phrase in her comments is may indirectly influence because the fact is that a ton of duplicate content does indeed end up listed as supplemental.

Everybody are talking about duplicate contents, I've got on my site some articles with PR2, PR3 PR4 in supplemental results and they are not duplicated at all.

Massive duplicating to put your site down like this scum did at www.natural-elements-online-si.com or do a search at natural-elements-online-si.com on Google and see how this scrapers use the customer accounts to place their mirror pages. They stolen contents from me, use my keywords, and stolen contents on their meta tag descriptions, destroyed my serp for a while.

My attorney advised me to get as much as I can a lot of proofs of their scams, once I will be finished, I will put these people in court.

If you have any suggestions other than what I am doing, please do.

I my opinion supplemental result is equal with banned site for me.

There are several factors why pages got SR, even unique content can get SR too

- Orphan page, mean no backlink at all, this make unique content get SR too
- Duplicate content
- pages with No enough content / no content

Well Affnice my pages are not orphan. Most of my product pages are internal linked, and my articles got deep links pointed on.

The SR pages are not duplicated. They've got unique titles, meta description or contents.

All the pages products have approximately the same descriptions lengh, some are in SR some don't. Contents on article are not short.

I cannot figure out the problem.

I find the whole SR debate interesting, I don't know enought about it however so would be good if we did find out all the factors that make it so.

I thought SR was becuase google had indexed your page, but had not deemed it worthy enough or it had not fully added it to the index, but i'm probably wrong.
