Googlerankings - tool to check your position in Google
Hi everyone,
I though you people may have the best use for the tool we just developed.
It can be found at www.googlerankings.com and will eventually tell you what your rank is in google for a given keyword.
Here is an example that shows you how to use (simple enough, just enter keyword and domain name and there you go):
Don't worry, it's free, no membership, no email monitoring, nothing.
Enjoy.
PS. This is a fresh development so any feedback and suggestions are welcome.

I am sure that would be against google's TOS i think.
I am not even sure if you can have the word "google" in your domain without their permission.
Googlecount.com had to face problems with google because of their domain name.
I am not sure though.
Thanks,
John

I take it the tool uses Google's API? The reason I ask is because I checked "www.webworkshop.net" and searched for "pagerank". It came back with a #3 position, but I have #2 and #3 across all the datacenters. My #2 page is the one that the tool says is at #3.
We had a discussion about the API recently where it was observed that it returns different results to those that are found when searching by hand. It's an oddity, but it seems that it happens.

Don't think its the API, I think its sending and retieving HTML. Against Google guidelines.

It's getting different results than all of the datacenters, though. That looks like the API to me.

It isnt.
It reads the output of the query with (n=100 or n=1000), and gives that back.
If you search with same number of results (100-1000), you find that the ranking the site returns is correct, but doesn't differentiate between more results from the same site. Every result is counted as a "place"

Ah. I never thought of that. Google does inject extra results when searching for more that 10 at a time.
It's academic now because the tool has been put out of action while they seek permission from Google. They won't get it.

When you think about it, there's no major difference in having a Google search box on the site and doing what they are doing. In both cases the visitor searches Google but gets the results displayed differently.
I still don't think Google will give the go-ahead, though.

If it is not using the Google API, it's not a good thing (from Google's standpoint). They are pretty strict on that, which is fine because from a programming standpoint the API is a much cleaner way of doing it anyway. The downside to it is you need a Google API key (which is free of course).
<plug>
Our free tool (see signature) uses the Google API, so it's within the bounds of Google's TOS. It tracks keyword placements and back links historically, and will split out charts generated in realtime to see your changes.
</plug>
Since it uses the Google API and stores your historical data, it does require you to select a login/password, otherwise it would not know who you are when you return.
