Google reports links but do they count?

I have noticed that for some websites Google reports many links but the sites do not rank well for the text link terms.

My question is = Do all reported links help ranking for the link text?

The answer to your question is probably both a yes and a no - if I've understood your question correctly. The reason I said that is because it will possibly depend on how much authority the site has for a specific term that provided you with the anchored text links.

However, I also believe that sites with lessor authority for a specific term will also be beneficial, as you gain more incoming links from a larger quantity of sites for that same specific term. Hopefully I haven't made that explanation too confusing.

A PR0 link today could be a PR5 link in a year.

That is always a really good point that I don't think there is ever enough emphasis on. Someone that links to us today may not have any pr, and could end up being the largest traffic source and the highest ranking incoming link in the future.

To me the anchor text and relevancy to where they linked to on my site is more important than the rank from the incoming link. Of course for a new site it is nice to give it a boost with some pr links.

I think it is depends on the quality of link or if the link is relevant to your site. Reported link will be a great help to rank for the link text.

How does Google judge the authority of a website? Relevant text links to the site?

If I get some good text links into a directory page listing my site, will it be considered an authority?

Hi,
Yes, relevant links is important. For example, if your site is about realestate and other realestate sites link to you obviously those are relevant and Google would consider that to be of greater value than say a site that's about jewelry. However, links from relevant content is also important. So say for example a blog writes a post about realestate and they link to your site that also is good, but Google may not necessarily consider that to be as much of an authoritative link as a site that is entirely based on your same category. There are certainly many variables to that. If that blog writes about realestate frequently then that would also be in your favor.

Directories help too, but my personal preferred method is by gaining links in the most natural way, which is from relevant content. That indicates to Google that you gained the incoming link based on "merit" due to your site being of interest to others. The more incoming links you gain based on "merit" is always a good thing!

I agree, the simple logic is - Google wants to make search more friendly and productive for visitors, so the content should always have first priority. If the visitor can't find the necessary information from the first site he or she searches, then it shouldn't take long to find it when the relevant content websites are groupped together.

Have a great day,
Peter
