Well, IMHO, it is best to have your ISP install the webalizer program:

The Webalizer

directly on your site's server. This is a FREE program so your ISP should be able to install it very easily and very quickly. But, if for some reason, they don't want to, then insist upon it. If they still don't want to, then move your site to a new ISP that will do this for you. The webalizer program is, in my opinion, much more accurate than any remote programs because the webalizer resides on your server. So, therefore, it gets ALL of your traffic. Sure, you can use analytics, statcounter and hitwise et al but remember those programs are all remote connections that can very possibly degrade your site's overall performance and also they all rely on user cookies and/or javascripts to compile traffic data. So they can't count the users that have cookies and/or java disabled in their browsers.

Anyway, after you get the webalizer installed locally right on your server's disk, then have your ISP set the webalizer to show at least 200+ search strings and 700+ total referrers. Just those two settings alone should give you a good amount of very valuable and very highly accurate traffic data about your site. Check it out!

IMO. Statcounter gives accurate stats than Google Analytics. I think Google is always updating that's why the analytics is affected in terms of stats results....

I have written my own web traffic reporting system (runs on asp.net 2.0) it tracks unique users, page views, avg time on page/site, leads generated etc etc etc.
I wrote it as I didn't trust some of the free ones out there to run on my servers, heres a bad screenshot - http://www.chillfire.co.uk/products/ocre

It is perfectly reliable and gives 100% accurate figures (its been up and running on a number of corporate sites for over 2 years, with no problem (other than really big SQL dsatabases -these sites get approx 50,000 unique people a month between them so lots of data), the speed hit is very minimal

The stats are +/- 2 people a day different to google analyitics, we run both as I stopped developing the ocre tracking system and now use google for all of them as they have nice graphs for our marketing team to use.

I am happy to help people out with trakcing stuff if they need it, most of it is out there hidden in the scripting community.

If you're trying to find out how much traffic your competitors are getting, Hitwise.com & Fireclick.com offer some of the best reporting available. They're definately the professional tools vs. the free ones out there.

Alexa is bollocks as it can be manipulated too easily.

Alexa is useless even when it's not intentionally manipulated.

You can do but the data is false and it does not tell you where the traffic comes from like Hitwise can. So useless IMO.

No read the question.

What? No.

Again erm.... no they are not!
is hitwise your company? or you promote it because it is a very good tool?

Alexa Ranking is just an approximate visitors of a site.. Not an accurate type of ranking.. Don't rely on Alexa much.. It is just a guide on how many approximate visitors visit your site...

Statcounter is better than goingup 'coz it doesn't display keyword analysis while statcounter do.. I've tried it already in my blog... I go for statcounter...

I am staying away from all the stats sites, most of the time behind they are marketing firms who collect data and use it for there own customers or SEO/SEM.

I am more for an internal stats program, so you can get your stats live and keep your freedom.
