Is There A Way To Tell How Much Traffic A Site Is Getting?
I was wondering if there is a program or such that one can use to at least get a ballpark figure of what someone else's site is getting per day/week/month. Does something like this exist?

Hi if you dont mind google, google analytics are very good, you must have access tot he website in question so you cant check up on someone else site this way.
Alexa.com has a large database of site reach etc, but they only get data from people using the alexa toolbar.
or if you hunt around scripting sites there always scripts that do traffic monitoring etc, I wrote my pwn in the end before google released theirs.
hope it helped

Besides alexa.com which isn't very precise, you can look for traffic buttons which people sometimes put on their website, that link to the service that offers them traffic analysis. Sometimes its set to public or they don't have a private option.
For example, in my country, the main traffic ranking website lets you see the total number of visitors for each website that uses them, how many uniques, where they got the most traffic from, and a few other informations. It's quite annoying so I don't use them, but probably 90% of the local websites use them.

Alexa? Ha ha ha! What a joke!
As far as I can tell, it can be off by four orders of magnitude.

Yes I uses www.hitwise.com and they are the main if exclusive collector of ISP data logs (I dunno how they get away with privacy). The reports or access is quite expensive however it can give you an essential edge if your in a competitive sector and you do in-house SEO. You can see where their traffic comes from be it from a site, direct or down to a particular search engine keyword. Very powerful.

Yes, these are the tools.
PHP Code:
www.statcounter.com
www.alexa.com(not that accurate)
analytics.google.com
Note: You need to install the code first before you can view your stats

Google Analytics and Alexa are both tools I use too. Alexa is not very accurate and you won't get as much detail from it until a site gets up in the top 100,000. If you don't want to use the Alexa toolbar, install one of their widgets from their webmaster section of their site. That should help your Alexa score too.

Thank you priyo and I thought I was the one reading the question wrong! The only company who can do this reliably is Hitwise.

You can do but the data is false and it does not tell you where the traffic comes from like Hitwise can. So useless IMO.

hi johan,
we use hitwise as well in our place. the ISP's give them anonymous data from their logs which they cross reference with experians (mosaics) demographics to get the picture you see in the reports. They don't get any personal data regarding the actual user and you can't track one persons path through the internet.
It is quite accurate to see levels of traffic, but not 100%, but better than anything else on the market at the moment. It is expensive though.

Yeah sure I was referring to the way the ISPs are allowed to sell our details on.

You can try using the statcounter, google analytics and alexa ranking. This is the tools on which you can view how much traffic you get from your site.

Well, both google analytics and Alexa are free, so, do not expect they will give the result like the paid one. I don't know about hitwise services though, since it is not free. I used both analytics and Alexa because it is free. LOL!
