Huge drop in Google - Help!
Hi I am new here, it is my first post...
I am working for a very big site that was getting 10 of thousands of unique user everyday we have a couple of million pages. Yesterday we experienced a huge drop in all keywords, and now we receive about 20% of what we usually get. Our website enjoy 99% of its organic traffic from long tail keywords.
Does anyone experiencing something similar or can explain why this is happening?

Google always updates it's pages lately... That's natural...Continue updating your contents and build more quality links...Submit to quality directories, etc...

Google's algo is crazy sometimes. Others having an SERP of 1 sometimes go below 100.

Thanks for the reply guys, We are a very big site and a drop like that never happened to us. its been 2 days now and hopefully it will get back to normal... We lost over 80% of our organic traffic, almost all keywords, and we are longtail so we are talking about 1000's of keywords, all behind the #100 rank. Very similar to supplemental results, but there are not in supplemental.
Is there is an update that is in progress right now, that will explain something like that, since we haven't made any changes...

Had it happen.
Although The engines won't officially tell you, they punish sites often, Have you got a rogue salesman sending out spam?
I had a site with over 500 keyword phrases in the top 10 drop off the map. Turns out a salesman stole the company database and was mailing out thousands of emails a day - I called the engines (phoned) and explained that the sales guy was wacked with a big stick, although they didn't acknowledge that the site was punished, two weeks later it re-gained what it had lost.
(I know you can get get away with calling at least twice for the same site.....lol)

What do you mean calling the engines? Who did you call? is there a hot line for Google?
No but seriously if you know how we can get it fixed, if we where punished which I honestly don't see why?!?!
Thanks for your help!

I think its that time of the year that lots of changes happen on the google datacenters (backlinks updates, pagerank updates ....)

Just an update, no change what so ever. Still what seems to be -950 penalty... I have read in other forums that this is happening to other sites as well. If anyone have an input whether this "-950 penalty" is really a penalty or a Google bug, I will be happy to hear them.

In my opinion a site with millions of pages is going to have a huge duplicate content problem unless you have 100% unique content, and lots of it, on every page. I think that maybe your run of success has come to an end.
Also, in my opinion, google has been suffering more and more recentally from huge website like price comparison sites, forums and directories as these seem to always rank higher in google serps than the website people want.
An example of this from my nieche is a search for wholesaler the entire first page of my regional results shows list, directories and forums but not one single wholesaler. Along with a community of others I have been constantly using the google feedback tool trying to let Google know they are NOT returning the results we are asking for. Hopefully they are starting to take notice.

We Are Back!
We are now back in the Serp for all keywords almost like before. Thanks a lot everybody for all your help.
I was wondering if we received a "yellow card" I have read an article about it, any thoughts or input about that?

It may be worth putting NOINDEX on some of your millions of pages if there are duplication content, I am guessing the site has a database of the pages so there should be a way of flagging which pages you want in the index and which you dont.

Google is starting to update some backlinks in some datacenter and I believe that if it's happening google also updating it's algo. Just continu your link building and wait for your rankings to come back. I think it's just temporary.

While checking some of the websites in iwebtool.com - pagerank prediction category, some of the google datacentres are down. That shows there is some overhauling in the entire mechanism of PR update. We pray that PR of all our friends' website will go up
