All I can say is that in my personal experience there is certainly a waiting time for a site to get into the SERP's, typically 3-4 months. Each of my sites had constant steady SEO done on them, each suddenly started appearing for keywords around 3 months after launch. I'm not sure if it's based on a level of inbound links or time or something else, but there certainly appears to be some trigger which suddenly launched each of my sites into th SERP's.

The Google Sandbox is very similar to a new website being placed on probation, and kept lower than expected in searches, prior to being given full value for its incoming links and content.
Of course... It is made by Google to filter sites especially the new ones....

"The Google Sandbox is an alleged filter placed on new websites. The result is that a site does not receive good rankings for its most important keywords and keyword phrases. Even with good content, abundant incoming links and strong Google PageRank, a site is still adversely affected by the Sandbox effect. The Sandbox acts as a de facto probation for sites, possibly to discourage spam sites from rising quickly, getting banned, and repeating the process." -- quoted from source

BUT, aren't there examples of new domains being created and getting to the top quickly?

I know that this happens. I have a trivial example. I coined a term: "accidental homeschooler", and used it in a bunch of articles that I wrote and on my own website. As part of the marketing effort, I created a simple one page site on a domain: accidentalhomeschooler.com . Which in it's first week, went to the top for searches on "acccidental homeschooler".

Of course, there are virtually no searches on that term so google might only use the sandbox effect to slow a rise to the top on terms that get some volume....

thoughts?

Google rank

I made an experiment with one of my new sites. First created a simple page with a small textual content on it. Then I put a very few backlinks to see how it works. The site stayed (probably in Google sandbox) no longer than about three weeks, and then was indexed by Google (not like for three month usually with Google sandbox).

Here is the question, why some of the sites stay longer in Google's sandbox, and for the others it takes a very short time?

Have a great day,
Peter

Huh........ Peterko you really need to lay off the hippie salad. LOL

"sandbox" doesn't mean it won't be indexed. The Sand Box, or also known as an "aging delay penalty" just effects how the site ranks in the search engines for competitive search terms. From my experiment, the sand box time frame is related to how many quality in bound links you have. The better the linking the less time in the sand box. Normally it's about 6-9 months, but my site with a lot of high quality inbound links emerged from the sand box at 5 months. I am also a firm believer that 20 high quality links is worth far more than 300 mediocre links.

It's not quite clear about site ranking in search engines for competitive search terms. If I understood you correctly, and based on what I see in SERP, some sites might never reach the certain ranks by the competitive search terms and always stay in the back of search results. Does it mean they always stay in the "sand box"?

Have a great day,
Peter

No after a year the site doesn't carry any algorithm penalty, (if there is even one), the site will be based off its individual merit. The Ageing delay penalty or sand box refers to a web site that you know SHOULD be ranking much better, but it isn't because it is only 0-5 months old. Have you ever tried to run in the sand, you expend a lot of energy but you don't get very far. There are a lot of other factors involved so no one really knows for sure, but if you have a quality web site that is optimized and you have a lot of good quality inbound links you should rank fairly good. Yes in some highly competitive search terms your site might never rank on the first page, but that doesn't necessarily mean you are receiving a sand box penalty.

No matter what you do you just won't rank well in your first 4 months, that is the "sand box". After that, you are what you are, deal with it and don't blame it on the "sand box".

I have a domain that has been indexed for over a year - I must have gotten some links even though I didn't promote it. All it has on it is a page announcing that we are working on the site and how it will soon be completed and information about the coming site. The project was delayed over a year now and we are finally coming to a completion.

Now do you guys think that because its been indexed for a year that when I start promoting it it will skip the sandbox?
I would say probably not myself because I believe the sandbox to be partly link aging but I was wondering what everyone thought.

regarding this you can check the creation date but was in March I made a domain surfunblocked [dot] com and in the April PR update it got a PR4 how is it some sites get this "sandbox" and others dont? This was only a month old and got PR never did any marketing or link trades.

Don't confuse page rank (Google bar) (GBPR) with good ranking in the search engine. You can have a GBPR of 4 and still not rank well for competitive search terms.

bestoptimized: Probably some truth to that, some people think the ageing delay penalty filter clock starts when you get your first inbound link, not when you get first indexed.

The sandbox does not always apply to non competitive search terms, linkbait is the best way to beat it quickly.
