Sorry but I'm extremely novice at all of this, and I'm not quite sure what Google is updating? How often does this happen? Can someone briefly explain this process to me?

Google is updating sites 24/7. What people are referring to on this thread is the PR of their site. Unless you sell links on your site PR really doesn’t mean a whole lot. If you rank #1 for a key term or word what does it matter if you’re a PR 2 or 7? It does give us webmasters a nice warm feeling in our tummy when Google says it approves of what we’re doing buy raising our PR though, and they do this about every 3 months.

Not the page rank, page rank itself is adjusted on an almost continual basis, however what they are referring to is the page rank that is displayed from the Google Tool Bar. That and the links that Google shows as links are only updated approximately quarterly.

Every quarter google ranks front, and back page of your web site. On the google tool bar you can get in idea of how google is ranking your page. The main rating you should concern yourself with is what google thinks of your back page not your front. Althought 60 to 70% of the board worries about what there front page is. the site that is submitting your link gets no benifits from front page pr. . The main thing i would concern yourself with would be search position, because once you get that your site will start showing in every position. (pr. traffic, popularity, and so on)

People who post for PPP, ReviewMe, SponsoredReviews, and those who purchase from them tend to care about the publicly available toolbar value because the pay scales are set according to these displayed values.
The information is a little bit useful, but not stupendously so.
You can rank for a search phrase you love with a low PR or vice versa. Your rank on everything changes constantly.
I think we are nominally "overdue" for this PR update, but everyone knows the schedule is irregular and not announced in advance.

I think this post on Matt's site may help you have a better understanding of updates.

Yeah.. backlinks have updated.
If you want a proof, you can check the google backlinks of the sites in my sig.
They were new so they had zero (0) backlinks in google. But now...

Google already update backlinks and PR. If your PR toolbar doesn't changed, it does not mean that google didn't update your PR. Actually you have PR on your site but the thing is you don't know what PR is assign to you.

Negative, Google has not updated it's page rank yet, that is Google Bar page rank anyway. However it looks like they have mostly completed updating the backlinks that are shown from the Google bar.

Agreed. I've seen in the past that Google updates some sites 2-3 weeks before the main update.
