Sometimes I use manual methods, it helps me more than using tools.

I must agree with you. Some tools even report a blatant wrong PR.

They open it in public and offer for free so that it will become popular even if it is not accurate.

Hey guys, I have just started a link building campaign for a site, and I'm using Google Webmaster Tools to check the backlinks. It's showing 895...
But, when I do a link: www.raleighmortgagepro.com manual check, I get ZERO!
Same with any of the other tools, such as smartpagerank.com
Anybody know why this is?

Backlink results differs from one Search Engine to another. Checking backlinks on Yahoo, Google and MSN will give you different results.

you may try
google.com/search?num=100&q=link: ( web site )
now you may read 100 results per search page
without num=100 you only read 10 results

I had a similar experience with my site. Lots of effort put into link building but no results. Then one glorious day the angels began singing, the clouds opened and the sun shone down on my site and the PR jumped! (perhaps the bots were in a good mood that day) It takes time for the backlinks to be validated and counted towards your rank. But don't fret, hard work pays like it always has.

I also like the Backlink Watch tool mentioned above. Been using it off and on for several months.
