lol no its no april fool joke (i know a tester)
The 1GB sounds good, but do you really think youll use it? It makes it sound great, yet not even 1% of users will use the full 1GB, so really they arent wasting alot of their space.

I agree with you on that, and it brought me to thinking, what about the majority of internet users, the common non-savvy user. All those people that send jokes everyday flash files funny movies etc.. I know when I first began with Yahoo Mail some long time ago, I never posted URL's like I do now, I always downloaded the file attached it and sent it on its way.. I don't know though, just a thought..

google rumor's april 1 2005 google will release GOOGLE anti-virus.
more google rumor's. google is allowing 1gb of space so they can have several thousand virus's to be stored at the same time so by the time 2005 file rolls around they will be capable of creating a anti virus.

i think this is something that has been coming for a long time. of course i heard about the whole deal probably 6 months ago, but that is besides the point.
It is the only logical step for google. You have MSN and Yahoo, who are google's direct competition, both making large advances in the search engine world. Currently google is king of tihs world. However Microsoft poses the biggest problem because they have recently shifted their online division's(MSN) purpose entirely to search engine technology in order to take control of the industry. When you have a sheer power in the computer and internet world as microsoft, with almost limitless resources in which to pull from, you have to admit it poses a real risk.
What google did however is to deliver a low blow. While pretending to fight microsoft and yahoo in the search engine department by constantly adjusting the algo, they have been working non stop on various underground projects which compete directly with the base of MSN and Yahoo.
MSN and Yahoo have built their internet foothold with free e-mail services and instant messengers. However google knows that it will not take long for them to catch up in search engine technology. The real start of this foundation battle that google is now waging began not with the e-mail, but with google news. Both MSN and Yahoo recieve a fair amount of visitors through their news portal, which for the most part is just drawing AP feeds. Google is continuing this now with the e-mail, which few can argue that it is not 100% better than hotmail or Y! mail, because it eliminates the banner ads we have grown accustom to on the respected free mails, and offers more storage than even the pay accounts of both services.
To continue this expect google to release the plans of it's messenger service, probably entitled Gmessenger, or GM for short, as well as probably a portal system like my.yahoo.com where there will be games and the like. The thing with this however is google will continue on the tradition of instead of just going one notch over the competition, completly outdoing the competition and setting the bar high enough where they simply do not have to worry about it for a few years.

Will it be @google.com?
If I didn't have a pop3 - I think I'd op for a @google.com email address. Heck, I might even get one just to "be cool."

I wonder how much space there going to give per email. I can see it turning into a huge WAREZ NETWORK. Or file distribution.

Big Brother LOVES Google!

Google's New Big Brother Email Service
Last month we posted an article from 2002 titled, Outsourcing Big Brother: Office of Total Information Awareness Relies on Private Sector to Track Americans. Now, google is all over the news having announced it's new "free" Email service. The truth is, google will be scanning and analysing users' mail. The implications are terrifying, some of which are addressed below in articles related to the topic we found today on the web.

I have read alot of posts about the "scare" that google will be scanning your email.. What do you think programs like SPAM Assassin do? They scan them for certain terms to see if they are spam or not. It's not like theres going to be someone reading all your emails..

Well, somewhere I read that people who, for excample, write an email to a friend about a bike they maybe want to buy could end up with an advertisement for bikes when the receiptant, or author, view that email. Pretty scary for some people I guess.
Would spicy love letters have porn adds?

Since google doesn't support adult/warez/hacking etc.. content, I doubt you will ever see those kinds of ads on google..

1GB? EASY.
they WANT you to store emails.
the more emails you store, the more targeted the ads sent to you will be.
google "bots" will read your mail and send you targeted advertisements. paid for by (why you and me probably).
What is a gb of storage nowadays anyway? Like a buck? Bought in wholesale? 1GB is easy to pay for.
