Google rumor proves true
A while back there was a rumor that google in an effort to compete more with MSN and Yahoo would begin offering e-mail services and IM services.
Well, google announced today that at least half of the rumor, the part about e-mail, is true and that they are going to begin offering e-mail with 1 gig of storage
http://www.cnn.com/2004/TECH/interne....ap/index.html
it will be intersting to see if they indeed come out with an IM service.

This makes me wonder, I read their Press Release as well as an article on cNET, however with Googles sense of humor and their PigeonRank and today being April 1st (Fools) Really makes me wonder...

Not a rumour - Google registered a string of "Googlemail" domains a while back.
As for the Google April Fool's joke - that's the space datacenter vacancies ad here (GCHEESE):

You can read about it at this site: http://www.w3reports.com/item/247
Quote:
Today, a handful of users will begin testing the preview version of Gmail. Unlike other free webmail services, Gmail is built on the idea that users should never have to file or delete a message, or struggle to find an email they've sent or received. Key features of Gmail include:
Search: Built on Google search technology, Gmail enables people to quickly search every email they've ever sent or received. Using keywords or advanced search features, Gmail users can find what they need, when they need it.
Storage: Google believes people should be able to hold onto their mail forever. That's why Gmail comes with 1,000 megabytes (1 gigabyte) of free storage – more than 100 times what most other free webmail services offer.
Speed: Gmail makes using email faster and more efficient by eliminating the need to file messages into folders, and by automatically organizing individual emails into meaningful "conversations" that show messages in the context of all the replies sent in response to them. And it turns annoying spam e-mail messages into the equivalent of canned meat.

i will definitely use Gmail and if they get G! or GIM i'm on it too
a gig is a LOT of storage to get for free. how do they get away with doing this? i have a bad feeling it's going to get abused by software piraters and warez groups.

Google branding
Next will see Google release thier own Coffee
"googlechino"
Talk about google building an empire, whats next from google huh!
Gmail will not be the last new service offered by Google.
It certainly will not go unanswered by Yahoo! or another portal. It will, however, mark a fundamental point in this search engine war that appears to now be in full swing.

I am guessing hosting. Lots and Lots of free hosting.. Maybe that would help in knocking some of the kiddies out of the game and leave it in the hands of the professionals.

I think they are planning that no-one will ever really use that much storage!
Better be POP3... not to keen on webmail!

Free hosting sucks. I wish these internet welfare cases would get over the concept that everything should be free on the internet. Everywhere you look is people wanting free hosting, free e-mail, free image storage, free this and free that. U know what this FREE craze got us? Ill tell ya. Popups, popunders, banner ads, flythrus and all the other annoying and unwanted things about the net.
If your not willing to pay your way then they should get out of the game.

Very well said! However the world is run by advertising now, and I fear it always will be. Which is why I am slowly getting out of designing/developing and into marketing/advertising.

They would have to be.. Otherwise Gmail would become a hub for warez. People would be attaching full CD's worth of MP3's sending them to 100 people at once..

I dont think google cares. They want to collect all the data in the world. Then go to the moon with it.
