Google Ads Works but the Cost
I have placed a number of ads on Google ads. There have been instances in which I have had no success and some situations in which I have had a lot of success. The problem for me with Google Ads is that it seems in order to get any kind of success, you have to be willing to spend a lot of money. For someone just starting out, this is difficult to do. Does anybody have any suggestions on how to utilize Google Ads without having to spend so much money? Any feedback would be much appreciated.

I keep my Google ad running, but I bid lower. I simply do not rely on them as a main source due to the reason you stated. I instead am now placing more ads with Adcenter and Yahoo and cutting cost quite a bit and getting better ad position and more qualified traffic. I believe the reason for this is that many of the ads that I placed with Google were simply getting clicked for the sake of people making money. You might also market off line as well in your local area if your product is the type that you can do this with.

Question for your reply
What is the Adcenter and Yahoo. I do have a Yahoo small business account, but because I have been so busy, I have not had the time to investigate all that is offered. I primarily joined because I was setting up a blog and I like that they use WordPress and my blog can be hosted for a relatively inexpensive price.

Adcenter is the program run by MSN on their search network live.com. you can find more about Adcenter here https://adcenter.microsoft.com/
Yahoo ad network is run by of course Yahoo. You can learn more about it from their site here http://searchmarketing.yahoo.com/as/
Both of these allow you to place advertisements similar to Googles on their search engine result pages by bidding on keywords for position.

Response to Hostnetric
Thank you Hostnetric. I have saved these in my favorites. I am going to spend some time learning about these two sites and what they have to offer and how much they cost. Once I understand everything, I am going to share it with my others and maybe we all can contribute. I appreciate your help very much.

No problem you are welcome. As for cost of course this will depend on the current bids and in what position you want your ad to show. The more you spend the better your ad position so just play a bit with their bidding tool to see where your ad will be. Good Luck on this.

Not necessarily. Remember that in some industries the cost of going after the most popular keywords is not going to be worth the time nor effort for a small site. You are competing against other well established sites with steady income. It is best to use a tool such as inventory.overture.com which is owned by Yahoo to help you see what tends to be popular. You can then target some less competitive variations that still produce nice traffic each month and get more for your money.
I personally will take several small keywords that produce marginal traffic each for a much lower cost per click then I will trying to compete with the likes of say Godaddy, hostgator and other big boys within my industry.

Are either of you, Monhunter and Hostnetric benefiting from your pay per click stategy? In other words, are you getting not only traffic but also purchases? Also, what kind of budget does one need to use for, say google, yahoo, or MSN pay per click and be successful at it? I understand the more money you put forth, the higher ranking your website can get, but what is the least amount one could invest in and still reap some benefits? For someone just starting out an online business; such as, myself, money is tight.
Thank you...

Bid lower. Look for some more specific search terms (especially purchasing terms like "buy widget") Use " " and [ ] around these specific search terms. You won't be able to get as much traffic using these types of strategies but you will probably get very high conversion traffic and you will be able to get it cheaper per click.
The problem with this sort of strategy is you will have to do a lot of it to make up for the low traffic...

I use the method I suggested. It is more targeted and you get more for your money. In other words yes I see purchases. The problem as everyone is saying is that trying to compete on the major keywords will not get you anywhere unless you have a large budget.
As for the amount to bid or budget each month that is entirely up to what you can afford. There is no set formula that everyone uses. We all have our own budgets and target our audiences differently.
Just make sure that when you do your ads that you do some research in the keywords that are relevant to your sites makeup. See what competitors are doing and then design your ad to be competitive. If you see no results after a week or so change your ad and see if that helps you. Sometimes it takes trial and error to get the right ad. That is why I suggest seeing what competitors are doing to gauge what may be working for them.

Google Ads
Thank you Hostnetric for you response. I am seeing that it is trial and error. I still have a lot to learn regarding keywords. It seems in the beginning you have to accept the fact that you are going to lose money until you get your campaign right. I guess I may have to wait a bit and build my business before I subject myself to losing more than I already have.
