Relevance of inbound links

I understand that inbound links are important. I'm new to this stuff. Could someone please explain to me what inbound links are and what the relevance is for Google?

An inbound link or a backlink as Google calls them is a link from another page that links to your page --- hence it is inbound.

If you put a link on your page to some out ide page then it is outbound -- point out. But for the page it point to it is inbound.

Google uses the anchor text from these links to judge the relevance of the page it point to when it is selecting pages to give to a searcher. So if your page is about rock and roll music and you ahve a bunch of inbound links each using 'rock and roll music' as anchor text. Then Google say Oh! that page they are all pointing to must really be about rock and roll music. So we will put it in the search results for a search for rock and roll music.

Now anchor text are the words you click on to follow a link. In the old days that was always "click here" but today people use their keywords as anchor text.

Hope this helps.

Great, very clear! But I have four more questions about these anchortexts:

1. What exactly is "anchortext": the text of the link that the user sees (the text between the a-tags) or the exact text of the html the links refers to (href="....." .html)? And I heard there is also a possibility of making an alternative text for each link. Does this also contribute to the relevance of that link?

2. I guess an inbound or backlink is a link from a page of a site A to a page of a site B? (so 2 different sites) How about links that refer to another page in the site itself (the same site)? Is there also such a relevance of the anchor-text?

3. And another question about backlinks from site A to another site B: Does it mattter if there is let's say one backlink from A to B or ten backlinks? Is it the more the better? If I make 10 anchor-texts like "dog-animal", "cat-animal", "goat-animal" etc. Does it count 10 times for the keyword "animal"? And does it count for all the 10 different animals mentioned in these links?

4. And a last question about backlinks from site A to another site B: do I understand that if I use more keywords in a backlink that all these keywords get relevance? For example if I make a link like: "animals like a dog, cat, goat, cow, horse ......"? Is it so that all these words are counted for in the relevance of that backlink? Is it the more keywords in a link the better?
