I think that Google wants to kick out of business all paid directories, bidding directories, milliondollarhomepages, one page website link sellers, payperpost bloggers. It is not a big secret that many webmasters was creating a website/directory/blog to get pr 5-7 buying 5-10 pr7 links before update. After this they was selling links (in some cases over $200 for frontpage).
Google just want to make this people to panic, close their websites, cancel monthly subscriptions for pr7 links they bought in june.

Lol, this seems like a good guess. I think that google thinks like we do, anything they can do to help remove spam etc the better.
As it says in their listing guidelines all they want to do is show a fair representation of the internet. Meaning good sites rate high, people who try and work though loop holes to get high PR get low PR.
I have never been through a PR update thing before, i was wondering, do they let you know or is there ever any indication that it has started. I have been lead to believe that the process takes around 1-3 weeks to complete?

Sometimes it is important to have page rank, especially if like me you are working on a new domain. Google delaying the page rank update is actually hurting the smaller and newer websites. Anyone who has an established website will not be too bothered I guess as they will still be displaying soem pagerank in the toolbar.

look at it this way, the longer it takes them to do it, the more time you have to build solid back links from reputable PR9 sites, and when it does happen you will get a better rank thank u expected.

PR update should be preceded by increased Googlebot activity to fetch fresh versions of all your pages. Anyone noticed increased Googlebot activity? At least, I have'nt.

I saw GoogleBot on my website daily. However this is not unusual (from the launching of my site GoogleBot visited it daily).

Matt Cutts (head of Google Webspam team) made a post on his blog
http://www.mattcutts.com/blog/how-to-report-paid-links/
Read this and you will get an idea on whats with the paid links market.
I believe these guys won't update the PR of the website that has paid links to it. Hence the delay. Not sure but seems logical.
Even of the best directory "Aviva Directory" isn't coming up for Google for its own name.

sweet link. Removing the 'paid advertising counting towards your PR' etc is good, it would mean that people use onsite advertising to get traffic (Qualified buyers) to their site, rather than increase their PR so they can sell adds on their site.
Currently the process is, make a **** site with no info, get links, increase your PR and sell your links to make money, and that really pisses me off.
good stuff.

I wonder how many Google engineers are checking these massive threads (similar one in Digital Point forum) and laughing to themselves.
