Google Mobile Payments Service and GPhone?

Over the weekend, Google published a patent filed in February 2006 for a mobile payment system called GPay. Duncan Riley theorized that GPay could well be the killer app for a Google phone, and would catapult them ahead of competition.

GPhone probably more likely to be an OS. I don't see why Google would see any need to get into the hardware business when they can simply partner with vendors.

Can it be true? Is the Googlephone nigh at hand? Not that we haven't been hearing this time after time (after time after time, etc.), but we've actually got some hot news from a number of very trustworthy sources about Google's plans for the mobile space. Namely, Google's mobile device platform is well on its way, and will be announced in the very near future.

Gphone May Really Happen, And Ammunition Group May Be Designing It

2007 was the year of speculation of a Google Phone, or Gphone. Handset manufacturer HTC was the center of attention around most of the rumors. But Google eventually squashed those rumors by announcing the Open Handset Alliance and Android. Instead of building an iPhone like device and service combined, they'd be backing an open source mobile operating system that could finally break the carriers' stranglehold on the mobile market.
