Peter is right on this statement. Actually there was a small comment Matt Cutts has made. I included Matt's comment on the web directory penalization post i wrote. This might clarify how they do determine which directories they do count as quality directories (note: they have not mentioned names, but from Matt Cutts comment you can figure out by yourself).
Removed signature links from this post in order to connect the conversation with Matt Cutts comment to clarify some misinformations that have been posted in this thread. I am doing this since i saw someone already have done it, in any case, if this is against the rules of V7N Forum I am not aware and feel free to remove the link.

the net is littered with information but nothing that I would call 'official' by any means, it is pure speculation.
There was some info in web pro news, there was an article by matt cuts saying we dont like paid links but it didnt say that they would doing anything about it, and there was a post somewhere which listed around 60 directories of paid links that had lost ranks in the google SERPs but no offical word as to if it is just a fluxuation or what have you.
Also, nothing new has come up since this post was started a while ago, eg no more lists of de ranked directories etc.

There are many paid directories out there...
I don't think Google can do such thing to all paid directories...

There company is worth 25 Billion, im sure they an afford to pay someone 1 million dollars to develop an algorithim to detect paid directories, infact, i bet there are some fat nerds who would do it for a six pack of Dr Pepper and a 1 year VIP unlimited food card to taco bell.
Or they could spend the 1 Million training an army of incredibly smart rats to browse the web deleting PD from their rankings.
they have more money than most small cities turn over in a year lol, they can do what the please imo

The fact is that no one knows anything... build directories/sites that have quality content and it really doesn't make any difference what Google does.

Its all talk and no one can shoot out any facts.....Someone writes a blog or a thread in a forum, and everyone thinks google said it . A quality link has no stips it either is or isn't period. Google isnt going to not update yahoos directory so you must understand it is what it is when they design a bot to do a job it has no favorites.

Yes there is plenty of evidence for those wishing to find it. Check 20 quality directories, check to see if their title shows up in Google, there are a few that have been penalized, eWebpages, Aviva, Alive, Searchmonster, Linkverve, just to name a few, but also scheck the inner pages, about 35% or so of them have lost their Google cache.

This is not every paid directory on the board, but i do see alot of high promoted sites that might have over stepped googles line, And even what im saying is just speculation, but my whole point is google wouldn't stop the update, because of a few web directories he has bigger fish to fry. Myspace , craigslist, youtube, and so on taking his traffic and customers. This whole thing started when a few big names got fried by google. Than everyone started speculating what googles going to do, and not one webmaster talking is sure of what google is doing and why, but i can surely tell you that its effecting the whole internet not paid directories only.
