The Idiocy of Google's Paid Link Crusade

Jennifer puts it well.

http://www.searchengineguide.com/laycock/010581.html

Quote:
Google has the right to do whatever they want with their algorithm and their index. They run a business and they make decisions that impact that business. If they want to discount, penalize or even ban sites that buy and sell text link ads, they're well within their rights.

On the other hand, I as a business owner have zero obligation to Google. It is not my job to help make their algorithmic life easier. It is not my job to limit my ability to rank my web site or to buy and sell ads to make Google happy. In other words, Google has the right to do it, but I have the right to ignore them.
It all comes down to competition.

I do wonder if Google have been a little foolish with this crusade. After all, many Webmasters were still under the illusion that Google was their friend, rather than their competitor.

This crusade makes the competitive relationship between Google and webmasters pretty clear.

Google has pretty much given in to the voices of a few SEOs their employees like to associate themselves with. Many of them hardcore spammers. Kind of like hiring the character from "Catch me if you can" to help reduce and prosecute check fraud.
Most of what Google does these days is appeal to the idiots who only listen when there are warning signs. Google likes scare tactics. Most don't do much.
The latest scare tactic was the worst with the penalty of a few handpicked web directories.

like 2 days ago you commented that google beating up on paid links thread was full of misinformation, and this post says otherwise (to a degree)

She has a point, but she forgets that if it says in the yellow pages Terms and Conditions that you cant do a mail out, and you do it, then your add wwould get removed.

I said like a week ago that google and paid link directories are like direct competition, they are both vying for the same business, if someone is searching aviva.com then they are not searching google.com

Personally I consider some of the paid link directories just giant leeches sucking money from people, but there are some that are helpful and have good info in them.

PR and your SERP position should be based entirly on return traffic vloume not back links or volume, but RETURN TRAFFIC, if people come back, site must be good, the more times people come back the better SERP you get. It is the only fair way that cant be manipluated, not without costing a fortune.

Google is on the money.

Google will cause their own undoing.

Even before this when I first started using adsense I felt that google tried far to hard to control and influence what I put on my web sites.

It's all very strange to me. A gigantic company that sells ad space (and etc) is worried about some paid directories ? Give me a break.

I think Google should spend more time making their search engine spam proof and less time pissing off their loyal customers.

they might have only 25 people working on the paid links issue and over 500 working on the advertising section

Steven,
No offense buy you make no sense in most of the posts you respond to. I know which post you are referring to. It is the Googe is not updating directories anymore, or something to this nature.

I was waiting for Peter to go and close that thread or at least clarify that know one in that discussion had a clue what they were talking about.

BTW it seems that you comment on every seo topic on this forum but you don't know that serp and pr are seperate and are not inter connected.

Also, In the future you return traffic will play a small role in your serp position in the universal search scheme.

none taken I dont offend easily.

I know about the SERP and PR difference, I am saying that your pr AND your serp SHOULD be related to return traffic.

peshawar - welcome to the forum.

I'm not clear on what you're saying. What contradiction do you claim I'm making?
