www and non www issue

Which form of domain name is more effective or powrful in googles eyes?

http://www.example.com/ OR http://example.com/

For the past few days, I have been researching the reasons to retain http://www.example.com/ and not http://example.com/ and vice-versa. To my utter dismay, I couldn't locate one. I am a hard-core blogger and loves updating my space regularly. Besides this, I could sense no progress in my page rank.

I am wondering if 'www' is the issue. Kindly guide me on this.

On my weibsite I used both versions - http://www.conference.ge
but after I decided to leave only one - www.version. Why? because It was the oldest one and many backlinks were directed to it. In Google sitemap I indicated www version as a priority.

Any results so far?

Use what you prefer, it doesn't matter as long as the url is consistant throughout the site and be sure to point the one you don't use to the other.

I still go for www domain..Because it has already establish its name..

In Googles eyes, both with and without www are same.

The general user however associates the web with www.

Check your backlinks, whether more of them point to www or without it.
Stick to one form, and use 301 redirect from the other. Also set this option in Webmaster tools.

My 2 cents

1) If you have a good amount of backlinks on both keep them booth. A good PR on both will do fine. If your selling something you can redirect the non-www to a productpage and www to the main one. This way you build a strong innerpage.

2) If you just started just use www. like kaykays says. Most people use that, and just redirect 301 the non-www to www.

Redirect non-www to www otherwise it would be seen as duplicate content!

Not true.

If you want proof search the index like this:

site:v7n.com
site:www.v7n.com

You will get 2 different results.
