XML sitemap is not needed if your site has a good internal linking structure.
If you don't have a good internal linking structure, a sitemap won't help you much.

I think XML sitemaps are not needed.

In my opinion if you site needs a human site map to help them find what they are looking for then your design has failed.

If you site is so big that people cant find what they are looking for add a search!

Get a program or whatever to generate your sitemap and get it uploaded to google as quickly as you can.

A good HTML sitemap(s) is good for search engine spiders more than for human visitors. It can help spiders find your pages.

Like I said if you site is designed properly you wont need a html sitemap for google to find the pages, in fact if you use a google xml sitemap google will show you what has been indexed, it takes the guess work out of the equation.

Implement both. XML for the search engines, and HTML to complement it and let users get an overview of your site. Having the two is better than just having one. (Check out the sitemap protocol specification from Google/Y!/MSN)
